Due to his strong patriotism to Rome and the fact that Marcus Aurelius was like a father to him, declares that Clodius Albinus is not the rightful Emperor and declares his intention to march on Rome to save the empire from the usurper. Throughout the empire, the Legions refuse to come to the Emperor's aid as their respect for Maximus has led them to develop a strong sense of Roman patriotism as well, thus they are unable to defend an Emperor who helped Commodus to murder Marcus Aurelius and then later betrayed Commodus to become Emperor himself. Maximus leads an army of four Legions towards Rome. At the time of his arrival, Clodius Albinus is already dead, killed by the Praetorian Guards. However, Maximus arrests the entire Praetorian Guard after learning that they not only killed the false Emperor, but committed genocide by killing all of Clodius' male relatives and allies, and raped the beautiful woung women in his family as well. The officers and the rapists in the Guard were executed for extreme brutality and the rest of the Guard was disbanded in disgrace. Maximus re-created the Praetorian Guard with the members of the Felix Legion; his best soldiers and the best and most loyal warriors to Rome. After being hailed as a saviour of the empire in Rome, Maximus meets with the Senate in an emergency session. Maximus turned down the Senate's offer to make him Emperor and instead supported the elevation of Senator Gaius Domitius Nepos. Once Domitius was declared Emperor and the situation in Rome had returned to normal, Maximus returned to the northern frontier to lead the Legions in the north on a campaign to conquer Germania. Quintus Cornelius Cinna, Maximus' best friend and recently promoted as general, was tasked with securing Dacia as part of the empire and then later attacking north into the heart of Germania while Maximus and his army pushed into Germania from the west.
