Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 7-10-1904 Event Description: Note: This is another version of timeline 383 Russian Pacific fleet, tipped off steams out and ambushes the Japanese fleet and the torpedo boat transports as they prepare to attack Port Arthur. Decisive victory for Russian fleet. Japanese battleships destroyed.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 8-12-1904 Event Description: Since Russians appear to be winning, and not wishing to offend them, Ottomans allow Russian black sea fleet out through Straits to link up with Baltic Fleet on journey east.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 8-16-1904 Event Description: King of Korea abandons his neutral stance with his army and joins Russians, attempts to expel Japanese influence.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 11-2-1904 Event Description: Russians discover involvement of British intelligence in Dogger bank incident and Russian Baltic fleet steams through North Sea. Russians had shot up British fishing boats claiming torpedoes had been fired at them. Discovered Japanese torpedo boats from Vickers still at Newcastle were secretly used with training warheads to make it appear Russians panicked. Tension between Britain and Russia heightened, as Russia now in stronger naval position in far east through their victory. Russians decide to go quick way through the Suez canal and link up with the Baltic Fleet.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 12-3-1904 Event Description: Combined fleets place blockade on Japanese islands and prepare to land troops to invade.
British merchant ships start to be stopped by Russian cruisers, tension rises. Military supplies cannot reach Japan.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 2-5-1905 Event Description: This is not what Theodore Roosevelt and the British government intended when they backed Japan. Hasty peace conference at Los Angeles quickly more or less gives Russia everything it wanted. Korea becomes a Russian protectorate. The Russians still have their powerful Pacific fleet, now reinforced by the Black Sea fleet, which was one of the reasons for the Anglo-Japanese alliance and the war.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 11-6-1905 Event Description: The treaty of Bjorkoe, August 1905 between Russia and Germany is not renounced in November 1905, partly because Witte brought in to negotiate a way out of the war in OTL is not a minister, partly because Russia is not dependent on France for huge loans, her financial system and huge investment program in the far east not having collapsed, and partly because of France showing great fear of being drawn into a war with Britain.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 3-9-1906 Event Description: The Russians will not agree to drop the anti-British clauses from the Franco-Russian alliance treaty, and are less willing to agree to give France the free hand it wants in Morocco.
Attempts at leaks by delcasse the Russians need a loan in the Paris press backfires. With britain having asked Theodore Roosevelt to chair the Moroccan Conference, Russia is more hostile, and France has to agree to Germany having a Sphere of Influence and a coaling station at Agadir, which was the original suggestion.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 4-15-1906 Event Description: The French will not agree to a secret Military Convention with Britain to send troops to the continent, partly because of the new relationship of Russia and Germany, partly because of the objections of the Russians who are now looking to Asia, and partly because Britain failed to deliver on Morocco in exchange for Egypt, whilst the attempts to stop the russian fleets sailing through the canal offended the french, who thought the canal partly theirs.
The "pro-European policy" lobby, Izvolsky and Samanov fail to come to power in Russia, being replaced by even more enthusiastic "pro-Asia policy" advocates.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 5-27-1907 Event Description: May 27 1907 Attempts at a Anglo-Russian entente fail. Britain has to give way over persia, which becomes a Russia Sphere of Influence and fear increases in Britain over the Russian Pacific fleet threatening their interests in the Far East.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 8-25-1908 Event Description: The Russian economy begins to grow and dominate northern China, aided by French loans and German technology.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 9-12-1908 Event Description: Admiral Fisher advertises plans to "do a Nelson" and "Copenhagen" the German fleet at Kiel, and then go on to land troops on the Baltic coast near St. Petersburg. "I know a splendid little spot in Finland". Also for the British pacific fleet battlecruisers to come steaming up from Australia and using Wei-Hei-Wei as a base aid the Japanese.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 9-27-1908 Event Description: The French must now adjust their relationship with Germany, in view of the new one of Russia with Germany. But in any case its good for business, particularly thoroughly modernizing the trans-Siberian Railway.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 11-9-1909 Event Description: Britain is increasingly dependent on the Anglo-Japanese alliance, whilst making every effort to get the Americans on their side, assisted by TR. They need the Panama Canal when it opens as the quickest way to get their battlefleet to the Far East.
Russia, alarmed by Fisher's utterances and Japanese revanchism, advises france to come to an rapprochement with Germany. "What we can do for you depends on Japan".
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 1-2-1910 Event Description: A carefully contrived Balkan War breaks out, secretly ochestrated by A-H and Russia now acting in concert once again over the balkans as before 1905, brokered by Germany. The turks are quickly expelled from Europe. At the peace congress, Serbia takes Albania as its corridor to the sea (there is no separate Albania in this Time Line), Bulgaria gets Macedonia, A-h gets the Sanzak of Novi Pazar and Russia gets the coverted prize of Constantinople. They secretly guarantee however the Ottomans remaining frontiers and will build the Berlin to Bagdad railway system for the Ottomans.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 5-1-1910 Event Description: The naval race accelerates. Britain will build 6 Kongo class battlecruisers for Japan to Vickers' design, in case they are attacked before completion. Britain builds the Admirals class battlecruisers (the Hood was the only one complted in OTL) and the Renown class to counter the huge Russian designs. Germany lays down the Mackensen class, France decides to start her proposals fro colonial battlecruisers. America, whose slow but heavy battleships are for coastal defence, still has no such design and is getting worried by Japanese actions, as they are now seen as the aggressors for starting the war. The Taft presidency does not wish to get involved with the Eurpean Powers but begins to build a battlecruiser Lexington class design for the Pacific.
On Edward VII's urging, an attmept is made to get his nephew to act as mediator with Cousin Nikki's government. This fails on the naval question.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-1-1912 Event Description: A radical ministry under Caillaux and Jean Jaures comes to power in France to bring about reconciliation with Germany.
No secret Military Conversations take place between the French and British General Staff on detailed planning to place a force of 100,000 in northern France.
The Italian government is anxious to renew its membership of the Triple Alliance.
Taft, because of fears of Japan and TR's pro-British views, will conduct a sucessful electoral campaign for a second term. Wilson will not be elected.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 9-1-1914 Event Description: 1st September 1914
The year is noted for its lack of tension in Europe. The vintage is a noted year and the harvest a bumper one due to the hot summer. The population return from their annual holidays.
Jean Jaures makes a visit to St.petersburg aboard the new French battlecruiser France, calling in at Kiel on a goodwill visit on the way back.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 5-17-1928 Event Description: The War of the Pacific breaks out with Japan invading Northen Hokkaiddo and raiding Russian shipping.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 5-18-1928 Event Description: President Herbert Hoover expresses grave doubts about international peace and the interests of the US. in the Far East. The readtiness of the Pacific fleet is examined. it consists of the huge 48,000 tonbattleships and Lexington class battlecruisers scrapped in OTL.
Things are somewhat different here, battlecruisers predominate, needed for colonial work and the Pacific, rather than slow battleships for the North Sea and Mediterranean. Aicraft carriers are still in their infancy, the fleets relying on scouting airships launching scout airships and seaplanes launched from ships and seaplane tenders.
The Japanese have concentrated on huge battlecruisers like the Amagi class scrapped under the Washington Treaty in our Time-Line.
The Imperial Russian Navy has their Izmail and their three funneled Czar Nicolas of 1917 of similar size as the backbone of their Pacific Fleet.
Britain has the Admirals class and Admiral Fishers' Imcomparible class, which he spent the peaceful '10's designing as the ultimate battlecruiser.
German has the Mackensen and super-Mackensen Graf Spee classes and france it's colonial Gille design colonial battlecruisers.
As the international tension rises Britain and germany send out ships to add to their Pacific fleets. France out her battlecruisers to guard French Indo-China and Madagascar. The fleet movements add to the tension.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 5-19-1928 Event Description: Imperial Russian Government presents ultimatum to Japan, orders general mobilization. The powers do not paricularly want war but find they are linked by a series of alliances, whilst each feels it must act. As fleet movements add to the tension. France and Germany are linked to Russia by alliances. Britian is linked to Japan, the british Pacific fleet is sent north from Australia to Hong Kong, and other ships are sent out from Britain The German Pacific fleet leaves the Marianas. However, Britain is anxious that the fighting does not spread to Europe and the Indian Empire is threatened.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-5-1928 Event Description: Manchurians who oppose Russia meet at Harbin with Japanese representatives and form a new government for the "Republic of Manchuria" which promises aid and support to Japanese forces who pass through the area. Japanese forces land 25 km north of Pusan and easily drive out the few Russian soldiers in the area. News of these events will encourage nativist movements in the Dutch East Indies, Maylasia, Saban, Signapore, Indochina, India, Burma, and to a lesser extent the Phillipines.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-6-1928 Event Description: The ultimatum has been answered by further military action.
A declaration of war is immediately made, citing at length "the rights of small nations" which must be defended, meaning Korea, whilst troops have been being brought east quietly in the intervening period on the modernised Trans-Siberian Railway.
The Russian Resident-General in Korea in instructed to ensure a suitable appeal is made by the Kingdom of Korea to the Protecting Power, with suitable publicity.
Fighting breaks out between Korean and Japanese forces.
The Imperial Russian Resident-General in Manchuria is instructed to issue a proclamation declaring Russia's desire to maintain the "sovereignty and territorial integrity" of China (over Manchuria), good government in the interests of the inhabitants, Manchuria) and that the Japanese are entirely behind the movement in Manchuria.
The Imperial Russian naval CinC far East issues a proclamation that in view of the unprovoked aggression etc. etc. that Japan is in a state of Blockade and neutral shipping must first call at Port Arthur or Vladivostok or obtain a certificate from the Russian Consul from the port they are sailing from that their cargoes do not contain contraband on a list issued by him. Also that Formosa and the semi-independent Chinese dependency of the Rykuku islands are unser Imperial Russian protection.
Russian cruiser squadrons land reinforcements on Northern Hokkaido backed by a naval bombardment and raid into the Straits of Tsushima (between Japan and Korea) at night.

Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-8-1928 Event Description: The Imperial Russian foreign ministry reminds Germany, France and Austria-Hungary of their treaty commitments, also pointing out to Germany, the Netherlands and France what disorders in their colonial empires in the Far East might mean.
The British cabinet meets and feels that they cannot remain neutral and must act. If Russia wins her navy will be in control of the Western pacific and menace the shores of Asia with British interests in China and colonies further south. They cannot allow Imperial Russia to have single contol of the area, which would even be a threat to Australia and New Zealand. Mr.Lloyd-George the Foreign and Dominions secretary announces urgent telegramms from the Australian Prime Minister demanding action. The cabinet vote for intervention, particularly as the reinforcements, in the shape of "Fisher's Pets2, his rapid deployment force has reached the Far East.
They consist of the huge Incomparible class battlecruisers, with twenty inch guns,which can steam all the way round the world without refueling, and the fleet of five light battlecruisers.

They join the Pacific Fleet of eight battlecruisers at Hong Kong and set off north.
Meanwhile japanes cruisers raiding Taiwan, which Japan wishes to regain and is about to invade tangle with Germany cruisers protecting Germany's interests in the Shantung peninsula of China
Britain can now intervene under the terms of the Anglo-Japanese treaty and a vote in support is gained in the House of Commons.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-14-1928 Event Description: Herbert Hoover sends a stiff note to the Imperial Russian government, as America fears its shipping trade will be affected. Japan depends on America for is oil, cotton, and non-ferrous metals, as well as importing scrap steel.
Timeline Number: 1204 Event Date: 6-16-1928 Event Description: The Imperial German Pacific Fllet has been reinforced with her heaviest battlecruisers, to protect German interests, as Japan is known to covet the German sphere of interest in China in Shantung and Taiwan and the Mariana and Caroline isles.

Germany now presents ultimatums to Britain to remain neutral and Japan , and on failing to receive a satisfactory reply declares war.
France, Italy and Austro-Hungary remain neutral for the present, but maintain a benevolent neutrality to Russia and Germany.
But in Europe there is no actual fighting and the period has been named by historians "The Phoney War".
