News outlets continue to speculate on who will be the next Pope. They believe that because most of the Sacred College is made up of people appointed by John Paul that it would most likely be someone who would continue his policies. They identify what they consider to be the three main voting blocs in the conclave. The first is the liberal Cardinals, who want to reform the church even further than John Paul I has, moderates - who for the most part whole heartedly support the reforms of John Paul I but are cautious about further reforms, and conservatives who reject some or all of John Paul I reforms. In total there are 149 Cardinals voting in this election, and a vote of 105 is needed in order to win. In the conclave it soon becomes apparaent that the moderates are the largest voting bloc, and that liberal Cardinals make up the second largest bloc. The conservative Cardinals make up the smallest bloc. The liberals are fielding Cardinal Roger Mahony, the moderates have Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna. The conservatives try to field Cardinal Ratzinger as a candidate, but his age and his hard line conservatism work against him. The most votes he gets is 16. By the end of the day it becomes apparent that Schönborn and Mahony are cancelling each other out. At the end of the day Schönborn has 87 votes, Mahony has 53 votes, and Ratzinger has nine votes. After dinner, Mahony asks the other Cardinals to vote for Schönborn, feeling that Schönborn would be the best candidate. Mahony says that he would not accept Papal office.

The United States takes careful notice of the Honolulu Accord nations on its southeastern flanks and begins drawing up contingency plans for war with each nation. Many Southerners begin to wonder if they might use this fear to guarantee the continuation of slavery, either by the Texan model or in perpetuity. Republican National Convention: as expected, vice-president Richard Nixon wins the presidential nomination for the GOP, chosing the Ambassador to the UN, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who had previously lost an election to Kennedy in 1952; by chosing him, Nixon not only hopes to balance the ticket, but also to force Kennedy to fight in his own state.

Republican National Convention: Full of shocks and surprises, as each man, and Senator Margaret Smith, begin a bitter fight for the nomination, which finally goes, after several ballots, to Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, known by his hard-line conservative policies and anti-government stands. The carrier of the state's rights banner picks senator William Scranton, a man more moderate in his policies and also from the important state of Pennsylvannia, with 29 electoral votes. As Goldwater accepts the nomination, he utters: “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”

Republican National Convention: the political equivalent of a bloodbath, as every single man in building begin to attack eachother and eliminate their opposition; the first to go is Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York, due to his divorce and apparent "lack of family values"; second was Senator Richard Nixon, who dropped out on the second day, when it was leaked to the press that he had his opponents spied upon and even wiretapped; Governors Ronald Reagan and George Rommey of California and Michigan respectively, both failed to obtain the neccessary number of delegates, so by the last day of the convention, the presidential nomination goes to a dark horse: a conservative representative from Ohio named John Ashbrook, a man not particulary known on the national state but that soon becomes the new bearer of the conservative banner, as he gains the endorsement of Governor Ronald Reagan, 1964 nominee Barry Goldwater and former vice-president Richard Nixon. Senator Margaret Chase Smith is surprisingly enough chosen by Ashbrook to be the nominee for vice-president. Some say is to balance the ticket geographically, others say that the republicans are desperate to win the female vote, whatever the reason is, she becomes the first woman to be on a presidential ticket for a major party in American history.

The Republican Convention held in San Diego. "Four years ago," GOP Presidential nominee Lamar Alexander says, "Dianne Feinstein told us, 'There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America.' I wholeheartedly agree. The problem is, she thinks the cure for what is wrong with America is not what is right with America, but what is left with America! And if we don't elect a Republican President and a Republican Congress this fall, if we get another four years of what is left WITH America, there may not be much left OF America!" Vice Presidential nominee Larry McDonald gives an even more incendiary speech: "Nowhere in the world has Communism worked. But Dianne Feinstein wants to try it in America! And we must stop her! Nowhere in the world has a nation made itself more safe by taking guns away from law-abiding citizens. But Dianne Feinstein wants to try it in America! And we must stop her! Nowhere in the world has a nation prospered without proper reverence for God. But Dianne Feinstein wants to try it in America! And we must stop her!" McDonald's introduction, by the Governor of Georgia, another Democrat-turned-Republican named Zell Miller, isn't too friendly, either.

A shortwave radio transmission from an undisclosed location announces the formation of the Army of Free America, an organized guerrilla force dedicated to “driving the Nazi invaders from the soil of this land.”

The AFA is at first dismissed as a joke by the Nazis, whose quick seizure of several American cities has persuaded them that Americans are too soft to mount a credible resistance. That will prove to be a fateful error. Free America cells, many of them "copycats" initially unconncected with the force whose creaation was proclaimed in the shortwave message, will appear in every state and play an active role in fighting the Nazis in the areas they have seized.
