Also quoted in the story is an internal memo written to Nixon by White House senior domestic advisor John Ehrlichman outlining plans for sending the “plumbers” team to break into the Beverly Hills offices of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist.

At 11:18pm Central time, Hurricane Katrina, which had rapidly reintensifed to a Category 5 storm, made landfall at Lafitte, Louisiana, 20 miles south of New Orleans, with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, with gusts exceeding 220 miles per hour. With a central pressure of 868 millibars, Katrina is by far the strongest tropical cyclone in recorded history worldwide. Forecasters had anticipated Katrina to make more of a northeasterly turn as it approached the Gulf Coast, but its rapid strengthening in the hours before landfall apparently blunted its easterly movement. The 40-mile-diameter inner eye of Katrina is forecast to pass directly over the New Orleans metropolitan area by 2:00am. There are unconfirmed reports of a catastrophic roof collapse at the Louisiana Superdome, where up to 30,000 residents took shelter there as a last resort. A storm surge of 45 feet is expected, almost twice the height of the highest levees.

Jonas sends two people this time. He was tiring of having nobody come back. If two went, maybe at least one could come back, right? At least that's what Jonas Lucroll thought. He sent a Marine named Yancy Fontenot and his young friend Jane Holnom. They found themselves huddling in a bomb shelter in Tokyo as the Doolittle raiders bombed the city. Americans in a hostile Japanese city, they didn't expect to last long. And indeed, before she could go back home, Jane was captured and sent to a comfort women battalion, doomed to a long life of service. Yancy had a AK-52 assault rifle however and he killed almost twenty-seven Japanese soldiers before getting shot in the chest and deciding too late he should have traveled back much recently. He traveled back, and died bloodily in Jonas' hands.

"Now that we have forced Britain to retreat into its home islands," Chancellor Adolf Hitler of Germany tells his staff, "and the Bolsheviks have been pushed back into the frozen wastes of Siberia, and we have all the oil we could ever want, there is only one thing that troubles me. What are we going to do with all those Muslims in the Middle East?" Reinhard Heydrich, a 36-year-old rising star on Hitler's staff, comes up with an idea: "We planned on exterminating the Jews anyway. Why don't we put the Muslims alongside them in the slave labor camps we already have, and kill them, too? Break the Star of David and the Crescent at once. Kill the children of Isaac and the children of Ishmael. The world doesn't need them anyway. They may even do us the favor of killing each other to an extent." Hitler likes the idea, and puts Heydrich in charge of this "final solution."

The Democratic Convention, at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, is host to a nasty floor fight. Fidel Castro, the former Governor of Cuba, wants his delegation seated, but the State Party Chairman wants the duly-elected delegation seated. Castro announces that if his delegation is not seated, and he is not at least nominated for Vice President, he will bolt and launch a third-party campaign. He is ignored. With the support of the outgoing ticket, President John F. Kennedy and Vice President J. William Fulbright, Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota is nominated for President. The Vice Presidential nominee is a little bit of a surprise: Former Governor Richmond Flowers of Alabama. Humphrey wanted to have geographic balance on the ticket, and also to have a tough crimefighter -- Flowers was once a crusading State Attorney General -- to counter the "law-and-order" rhetoric of the Republican nominee, former Vice President Richard Nixon. In the polls, the race is neck-and-neck.

Over 200,000 people gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., at the climax of the Poor People's Campaign for Jobs and Justice. The concluding speaker is the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King: "I have a dream, that one day, this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of its creed: We holds these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal! I have a dream, that one day, my four little children will be judged not by the size of their bank account but by the content of their character! I have a dream today!" President Albert Gore invites King and his associates to the White House to discuss matters. Vice President John F. Kennedy also attends. Unlike Kennedy, Gore grew up poor before becoming rich, and tells King that poverty will be treated as an enemy of America, the way it had been during the Eleanor Roosevelt Administration 30 years earlier. After the preacher leaves, Kennedy, who had seen the speech on television, tells Gore, "He's damn good."
