Rock,pumice and ash are thrown many miles into the air in a towering grey cloud that hazes the summer sun and falls heavily over the towns of Pompeii,Herculaneum,Stabeii and Oplonti, and even reaching as far as the Imperial residence at Misenium. Empress Julia allows the Imperial barge to be used by the admiral,Pliny the Elder in a rescue flotilla to the affected towns. The Imperial family can only look on in horror as Vesuvius rips itself apart,belching forth a terrifying sight of a massive column of ash,fire and pumice now reaching an unimaginable height and size up into the afternoon sky,blotting out the sun and turning day into night,illuminated only by the fiery glow of lava spewing out of the summit and down Vesuvius' slopes..and lightning raging high in the ash cloud like a violent storm.The Imperial family are pushed to flee Misenium as thick choking ash falls down around them,and tremors rake the earth. Fearing that the route out across land would be too dangerous,Empress Julia awaits for the royal barge to return in hopes to escape by sea...a delay that leads to fateful consequences..
As night falls,almost un-noticed in the eery darkness of the volcanic ash cloud,a massive explosion rips across the bay.The Imperial family look on in horror as the towering cloud high over Vesuvius seems to collapse under its own weight and falls down the mounts sides to crash upon the calamitous towns of Pompeii,Herculanuem and Oplonti a deadly raging pyroclastic flow to smother and burn its poor populous that had left it too late to flee Vesuvius devastating eruption.The screams and the terrifying sights are painfully plain to see and hear even several miles across the bay at Misenium...But not even Misenium is safe. The deadly Pyroclastic flow billows out into the open waters,boiling alive those who thought to take refuge in the harbour caves,in the waters and in the boats in the bay.including much of the flotilla.It does not reach Misenium,already savagely ripped by tremors,but something almost as deadly and invisible to see,...does. Poisonous gases are blown upon the city. Pliny the Elder,awaiting to board his boat on the shore,literally falls down dead..People,even the brave Praetorians, panic and flee with the Imperial family coated in choking ash. The Empress Julia,with her daughter Livia and son Drusus under her cloak flee behind a high wall for safety... A while later..while Vesuvius is still belching out lava and fire,but the worst thought to be over,a small surviving detachment of Praetorians attempting to protect the Imperial family, find Julia huddled with her children by the wall.The children are roused from under their mothers cloak and look up to their mother.Her beautiful face is smeared with ash and dirt,but her blue eyes stare unseeing..Sadly,the Empress Julia did not survive their night in hell..
