Austria will regain Galicia, the Ionian isles and the Pelleponese as a protectorate. Prussia retains Prussian Poland and gains the long coveted kingdom Hannover and important territory on the Rhine. A German Confederation is set up under the joint chairmanship of Prussia and Austria. Italy is divided between France and Austria, with the Pope getting Rome. The allies had always been uncertain, being kept in line by Castelreagh and the British. They had actually agreed to Natural frontiers in 1814, when Castelreagh was rushed across Europe in a coach to get them to break the agreement. Austria had wanted Marie Loiuse and regent, replacing Napoleon; Russia had wanted Count Bernadotte as king, who they were sponsoring, Prussia just wanted as much German territory as possible. | 1969 | 346 Add An Event | Simon & Garfunkle record what will become their most famous album, _Tombstones_. Inspired by the Apollo tragedy, "Armstrong and Buzz," the lead song on the album---featuring the amazing vocals of Art Garfunkle---spends 10 weeks at number 2 on the charts, and rises to number 1 when Bowie's "Space Oddity" about Major Tom falls to number 9 in mid-October. The Album remains number 1 for an unprecedented three months. Critics hail the piece as "the perfect album" and praise Simon's innovative use of violins and brass in conjunction with acoustic and electric guitars. The most important piece, however, from a musicological point of view is "African Harp," the main song on side 2. Boasting a seven minute African talking drum cantata (as Simon calls it), accompanied in places by bongos, timpany, and the signature African harp, the song remains in the top forty until February of 1970. The incredible success of the album ultimately leads to several world tours as well as numerous Grammy Awards. The release of _Bridge over Troubled Water_ in April of 1970, while not as stellar a success as _Tombstones_ guaranteed Simon & Garfunkle's place in the Hall of Fame. Indeed, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," the album's title piece, would later be hailed as the pair's "signature song," as it best showcased Simon's voice and guitar work, as well, of course, as Garfunkle's "angelic," "edenic," and "otherworldly" vocals (as various critics put it).
