| 65 | 481 Add An Event | Nero Claudius Caesar, formally Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus of Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Julia Agrippina, grandnephew and adopted son of the deceased Emperor Claudius (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Germanicus), turns out to be alive and has been secretly building up his forces to prepare him for his return to Rome. The Nero that was crucified was Tarentius Maximus, a freedman who resembled Nero perfectly in appearance and personality. As information of the truth about Nero surfaces throughout the Roman Empire (mainly spread by secret agents of Agrippina who vowed to avenge her death), millions of Romans flock to Nero's side. The armed forces of the Roman military also swear allegiance to Nero, claiming that they want a blood-descendant of Julius and Augustus Caesar to command them rather than one who has merely married into the Julio-Claudian Dynasty. Upon reaching military bases in Rhaetia, four Legions side with Nero, thus joining with his army of three Legions from the east. As Nero marches into Italy and towards Rome with a force of seven Legions (35,000 Legionaries), the Praetorian Guard assassinates Galba and the Praetorian Prefect loyal to the deposed Emperor. The Praetorians then send thir heads to Nero as proof of their loyalty to him. Nero enters Rome and recieves a loving welcome from the populace. Upon entering the Senate House on Capitoline Hill, the Senate declares Nero as the rightful Emperor of the Roman Empire. Nero's first acts as Emperor is to marry Octavia, who had secretly aided in switching Nero with Tarentius Maximus due to her great affection and love for him. Nero also wins popularity for his clemency by adopting Octavia's son by Galba, thus renaming him as Octavius Claudius Caesar Germanicus (Octavius Caesar). Nero then promotes Seneca, a Senator and popular philosopher who had been a close friend of Agrippina, as Consul and Burrus, the Praetorian First-Tribune who convinced the Praetorians to turn on Galba and swear loyalty to Nero, as the new Prefect of the Praetorian Guard. | 1976 | 4142 Add An Event | A major international incident shocks the world at the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Montreal. Several Warsaw Pact athletes announce through a spokesman that they have collectively defected to the West. From the Soviet Union: Gymnast Olga Korbut, hammer thrower Yuriy Sedykh, triple-jumper Viktor Saneyev, and modern pentathlete Boris Onischenko. From the German Democratic Republic (a.k.a. "East Germany"): Marathoner Waldemar Cierpinski, shot-putter Udo Beyer and swimmer Kornelia Ender. From Poland, sprinter Irena Szewinska. And from Romania, the darling of the Games, 14-year-old gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who had just a few days earlier performed the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastic competition -- the first seven, in fact. All but Onischenko had been Gold Medalists, either at this Olympics or the ones in Munich, West Germany in 1972, or both. The Ukrainian-born Onischenko had been disqualified from the modern pentathlon for cheating in the fencing portion of the competition, and had no reason to return to the Soviet Union. The Soviet officials are stunned, and they demand that the Canadian government hand the athletes back over. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau rebuffs them: "They want the freedoms that our country offers. We are not retracting our offer. If they wish to stay, they shall stay." The Eastern European sports machine has been dealt a crippling blow, one that makes the loss of a few hockey players seem small by comparison. And the next Summer Olympics, in 1980, are scheduled to be held in Moscow. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |

AIDS, an acronym for "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome," is a virus attacking the immune system, spread by blood transfusions or sexual contact. For the most part, it has affected mainly homosexual men, and social conservatives in the Republican Party have mocked the AIDS Research Initiative, created in this bill, as "welfare for homosexuals." Nevertheless, Young, an ordained minister, says, "Signing this bill into law is an act of Christian compassion. Those who oppose it as immoral fail to understand that Jesus healed the sick, without regard to their sins, real or perceived. And those who oppose it as government intervention tend to forget how much they like government investigations of waste, which are government intervention. So is increasing defense spending. Anything can be called government intervention. I choose to err, if this is an error, on the side of offering hope." Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |
