The two women hit it off right away, discussing politics (VP Rice shares stories about President Bush and his father, while Baroness Thatcher shares stories of her meetings with Ronald Reagan) and current events.
Baroness Thatcher gives Dr. Rice some serious advice: "Make sure the President knows that now is not the time to slack off. So much of Europe - including my own country - derides him as a cowboy. So what? They said the same thing about Ronald Reagan - many still do - and because he stayed the course, the world was changed forever. Don't let President Bush make his father's mistake of trying to accomodate the wishes of his enemies - it is clear to me that they seek little but his downfall, not to cooperate by any means."
Dr. Rice assures Baroness Thatcher that she will convey the message.
Getting back to Edinburgh is not easy - the usual anti-globalization protestors, anarchists, and other radicals are out in force.
Dr. Rice and President Bush discuss Dr. Rice's visit with Baroness Thatcher numerous times over the course of the summit, and President Bush makes the decision to stay firm.
