| 1916 | 900 Add An Event | Rome The Italian cabinet met to consider the news. The Italian prime minister now regretted his enthusiastic personal commitment to the Entente. In particular because a number of members of his own cabinet were coming out against it. If the war ends without an Entente victory italy would not received the substantial areas of territory she had been promised, or rather bribed. "many of these areas in the north are Italian" he thought, but many have misled populations, perhaps a plebiscite for them would do, as much advertised by the Americans and British". Other cabinet members pointed out Italy needed territories, position and above all colonies - like the other great powers. If, they said, we were to throw in our lot with the Austro-Hungarians our navy would dominated the Mediterranean. We could think about going out into the Atlantic and Red Sea. There was Savoy, Nice and even Corsica. italy had always coveted Tunisia and if the French colony near Abysinnia was added to their possessions there would be a continuous colonial territory for Italy there. We could not afford to not act before the war ended. "Perhaps" he thought "the time had come to dust off the 1882 alliance with Germany and Austro-Hungary, rejoining the triple Alliance. The secret agreement with france had only to remain neutral if france was not the aggressor". It was decided under the circumstances, to go along with the armistice anf peace conference without delay. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |

| 1995 | 1215 Add An Event | President Clinton addresses the nation from the Federal Building in Denver, explaining that the launch was confirmed as an accident and that dialogue is underway with the Russians to determine how the normally rigorous safeguards of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces broke down. He appeals for calm and unity and for the nation to put aside its differences to aid the stricken Northeast. US and NATO military forces remain on highest alert.
Meanwhile, in Russia, the arrest of Zhirinovsky proved to be a ploy to bring him under the protection of FSB elements loyal to his party. These elements, along with hardline Communists and several rogue military commanders, are now moving against the Kremlin, demanding Yeltsin's ouster over 'a catastrophic blunder that could well have destroyed not only Russia but the world'. The Chinese are still moving on Siberia, but with the Russian military in chaos in the aftermath of the accidental launch and the United Nations Building (along with the UN representatives of nearly every country on Earth) vaporized, there's not much the Russians can do to protest China's actions at the moment. Discussions to reconstitute the UN at Geneva, Switzerland are underway. Right-wing militia groups begin promoting the strike at the Northeast as 'a sign of God's judgement against the United Nations, the New World Order, and the media and banking elite'. Kemp is pressured by Christian conservatives, still smarting from the 1980 Jesse Helms disaster and the scandalous Ronald Reagan Presidency they worked so hard to elect in 1972, to name a Vice Presidential nominee acceptable to them. Kemp reminds them that he is the leader of the party, not any of them. Seeking someone with more defense and foreign-policy experience than himself, he chooses Donald Rumsfeld, former Congressman from Illinois and Secretary of Defense under Reagan. Republican officials take great pains to point out that Rumsfeld was still in the Congress when the "Saturday Night Massacre" happened in 1973 and had nothing to do with it, and had a clean record at the Pentagon. By nominating Kemp, with connections to the West Coast and Northeast, and the Midwestern Rumsfeld, the Republicans hope to hit the Democrats in their geographic bases.
