With the Zirid Caliphate cities now largely in Byzantine hands, the Emperor takes note of the recent development of a printing device using metal type to announce to establishment of seven Imperial libraries: one at Valencia, one at Carthage, one at Naples, one at Constantinople, one at Jerusalem, one at Trebizond, and one at Nicephorea at the mouth of the Scipiana (Dniepr) River. They also offer to print any document from Roman times or previously that the libraries do not contain at Imperial expense, so long as ten copies may be made: one for each library, an additional copy for the Emperor, and two for the person who brought the original document. This immediately attracts hundreds of monks from all over Europe bearing all sorts of papers, including works under threat from Viking and pagan raids or fires. Two of the first documents to be copied is a copy of Ptolemy's Geography and Galen's medical notes.

"The Bay of Pigs: How the World Nearly Came to an End," by historian John Bouvier, is published. The author, who changed his name upon reaching adulthood, is the son of John F. Kennedy, the President whose misguided actions of April 17, 1961 began World War III and led to the deaths of over 100 million people, including over one million Americans. He, his sister Caroline, and their mother, First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, survived because they had been at the family home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts at the time of the Soviet attack on Washington. In his book, Bouvier admits his father's mistakes, but praises the healing actions taken by his successors, John McCormack (1961), Everett Dirksen (1961-69), Richard Nixon (1969-77), James Carter (1977-85), Howard Baker (1985-93) and William Clinton (1993-present). He especially hails the Civil Rights Act signed by Dirksen in 1965, the normalization of relations with China by Nixon and Premier Deng Xiaoping in 1976, the treaty signed by Carter and Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1980, and the World Environmental Treaty signed in 1987 by President Baker, President Gorbachev, and Premier Deng and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, outlawing nuclear weapons and committing the United Nations to helping those still suffering from radiation poisoning from 1961 and their children who suffer from birth defects. "While the Soviet Union, in the words of 1980 Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan, was an 'evil empire,'" Bouvier writes, "our nation's maniacal pursuit of that nation's destruction nearly resulted in our own, and those of all other supposedly 'civilized' nations. We can never know for sure what the cost was, for who knows what future President, what international peacemaker, what disease-curing scientist, what sports legend, what great author, what great artist, may have been killed, in any of the affected nations, in April of 1961. We have gained wisdom as a result of the greatest foolishness in human history. For, in the final analysis, we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all hope for our children's future, and we are all mortal."

"I'd suggest myself for Vice President," LBJ tells him, "but we don't get along too well, and besides, you're gonna need me to get Congress in line for you." RFK mentions neither President Lodge nor disgraced former President Nixon in his acceptance speech, but says, "The Republican Party has pursued a course of domestic scandal and foreign intrigue. In what is now called the 5-year plans, Emperor Jin makes new legislation calling for an extreme social, economic, and political rebuilding of Korea. His plan calls for the building of well-established highways between all the towns and cities, the destruction of slums and dirty streets in Seoul, the vast enlargement and beatification of Seoul, the expansion of Inchon and Pusand, the creation of 8 major cities in the 8 major provinces, the expansion of agricultural technology, greater expansion of the military and the navy, more development of steam-power technology, a better civil exams test open to all, the establishment of permanent public schools with Western and Eastern teaching combined, the end of corrupt officialdom, the establishment of a High Judicial Court, a Senate, a better bureacracy with inspectors, and finally expansion of investment in trade. Although many conservatives disagree with the new law, the Emperor is able to legislate it because of the Korean people's immense support for him, the power of his large army and navy, as well as the end of court rivalry, done by force and negotiation. All corrupt officials, as well as the squabbling North and South party advisors at court are exile to the New World.

Missionaries have now been sent to China and Japan, as well as throughout Asia. Despite freedom of religion, all Protestants are more lightly taxed, giving additional incentive to join the religion. On the 188th anniversary of the establishment of the District of Columbia, Congress officially recognizes the ratification of the D.C. Statehood Amendment, the 28th Amendment to the Constitution, following its approval last week by the legislature of the State, appropriately enough, of Washington. An Amendment was necessary because the 23rd Amendment states that the District receives Electoral Votes equivalent to what it would have if it were a State, and so the 23rd Amendment joins the 18th Amendment (Prohibition of alcohol) as only the second ever to be repealed. In the fall, the District, now renamed the State of Columbia (CL for postal purposes, so as not to be confused with CA for California or CO for Colorado) will elect a Congressman, two Senators, a Mayor, a City Council, a State House of Representatives, a State Senate, and a Governor, with the Governor and State Legislature taking over the functions usually handled by a State government that had previously been run by the Mayor and City Council with Congressional assistance. Several conservative Republicans, and a few conservative Southern Democrats, refused to back the Amendment, since the newly-elected Congressman and Senators would almost certainly be black.

To succeed the retiring Thurgood Marshall, the first black Justice to serve on the Supreme Court, President Jack Kemp appoints his White House Counsel, James Meredith, who in 1962, with the intervention of the Humphrey Administration, had been the first black student enrolled at the University of Mississippi. Senator Trent Lott, an Ole Miss student then and a member of the Republican Senate leadership now, attends the White House press conference announcing the appointment. He says he and his classmates were wrong to oppose Meredith then, and he asks all Republicans to support him now. Meredith will be confirmed by a solid majority, despite his opposition to several liberal causes, including affirmative action, which has helped millions of black people, including those trying to enter colleges.

Governor Dukakis selects Elizabeth Holtzman, former Congresswoman and now District Attorney of Brooklyn, New York, to be his running mate. The second female and first Jewish nominee for Vice President of either major party, the choice also deflects some criticism Dukakis has received for being "soft on crime," as Holtzman has been a particularly tough prosecutor. Rev. Jesse Jackson and Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, both technically still in the Presidential race, announce they are dropping out and endorsing the ticket, Jackson because Holtzman is liberal enough, and Simon because, between them, Dukakis and Holtzman should be able to reach out to enough voters to defeat President Jack Kemp in November.

Despite his Catholicism, his big-city ways and a 1903 conviction for fraud, former Governor James M. Curley of Massachusetts is nominated for Vice President with President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. The other possible choices all offended more people than did Curley: Senator James F. Byrnes of South Carolina was a Southerner, a racist, too conservative and a man who had left the Catholic Church; and incumbent Vice President Henry A. Wallace was too liberal and seen as too friendly to the Communist Soviet Union.

The Republican National Convention is held at the Grand National Livestock Pavilion, a.k.a. the "Cow Palace," in Daly City, California, just south of San Francisco. Governors Nelson Rockefeller of New York, William Scranton of Pennsylvania and Nile Kinnick of Iowa had all run for the nomination. But Rockefeller was rejected by Republican voters and delegates for his divorce and remarriage, and for his big-spending policies; Scramton for spending nearly as much in Harrisburg as Rockefeller has in Albany; and Kinnick because of his unusual religion, Christian Science. The winner of the nomination is the darling of the conservative movement, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona. He has been openly supported by groups like the John Birch Society, an aggressively anti-Communist organization that has taken was many consider to be "extremist" stances. "I would remind you, my fellow Republicans," Goldwater says, "that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice!" When the cheering stops after a couple of minutes, he adds, "And I would remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" Seeing this, Senator Robert F. Kennedy of Massachusetts tells his brother, President John F. Kennedy, "That's it, Jack. Any chance that SOB had to win is gone now." Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy, a former assistant district attorney in Boston, now running Jack's campaign for a full term, asks, "You don't think Barry lost his last chance when he gave Kinnick the Vice Presidential nomination?" Jack tells them, "No, he lost his last chance when Albert Gore died. Against a living Albert, who would've had to defend his record, he might have had a chance. But he's running against Albert as much as he's running against me, so forget it. It's not fair to him, and it certainly isn't fair to Albert. Life is unfair." When the Democratic Convention is held at the Convention Hall on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Jack will be nominated for a full term, with Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas as the Vice Presidential nominee.

The Democratic Convention is held at the boardwalk Convention Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Party, a shadow of its former self, couldn't get any city bigger than this once-thriving, now-suffering seaside resort to host their quadrennial bash. Even harder to find is someone to take the practically useless nomination. Despite rumors that Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. might sweep to the nomination, he does not show up. After seven ballots, Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota is chosen. Almost out of a desire to get out, the delegates choose their host, Governor Richard J. Hughes, as Vice President. It looks as though the Humphrey-Hughes ticket hasn't got a chance.

The Live Aid concerts for African hunger relief are held. At Wembley Stadium in London, the Beatles reunite to perform before a paying audience for the first time in 19 years -- the first time the four of them have even been in the same place for 16 years. Each of the Beatles sings a song for which he once sang lead: John Lennon kicks it off with "Help," Paul McCartney sings "Yesterday," George Harrison sings "Here Comes the Sun" and Ringo Starr sings "Yellow Submarine." They each do one of their solo hits as well: John sings "Imagine," Paul "Band On the Run," George "Give Me Love, Give Me Peace On Earth," and Ringo "It Don't Come Easy." They close with "She Loves You" and "Hey Jude." The Rolling Stones, the Who and Led Zeppelin, each also having broken up, reunite for the London phase of Live Aid. Also playing are concert organizer Bob Geldof, Elton John, David Bowie (who does a duet of the Motown song "Dancing In the Street" with Stones frontman Mick Jagger), Queen, U2, Genesis, Wham! The American phase of the concert, held at Albert Gore Stadium in Philadelphia, is headlined by Elvis Presley. The King of Rock and Roll recently turned 50, but is healthy and trim and knocks the socks off the 125,000 fans in attendance. Among the other American performers are Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, John Mellencamp and, in an emotional moment, Philadelphia native Teddy Pendergrass, making his first concert performance since being paralyzed in a car crash.

Governor Dianne Feinstein of California is nominated for President by the Democratic Convention, held at Madison Square Garden in New York. Following her "defeat" of Governor Hillary Rodham of Arkansas in their debate on "The Arsenino Hall Show," about one out of ten Rodham delegates shifted to Feinstein. That, plus about two of three unpledged delegates going to the San Franciscan, make the difference. To appease Rodham, she agrees to take on some of her campaign staff, including James Carville and Paul Begala. And she takes as her Vice Presidential nominee Senator Al Gore of Tennessee, a failed Presidential candidate four years ago whose father was a President and mother was a Supreme Court Justice. Gore gives a strong acceptance speech, ripping the duPont Administration's policies at home and abroad: "And now they want a third term? No, my fellow Americans. It is time for them to go!" He rattles off issue after issue, and repeats the kicker: "And it is time for them to go!" Feinstein's speech is less boisterous, but it brings the crowd to its feet. President Pete duPont will have to have a Convention that is united, enthusiastic, and positive to have a chance at winning a third term, something only Theodore Roosevelt has ever done.

President Hoover’s hand picked successor is nominated by the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Senator Hiram Johnson of California, a strident New Deal Republican, is nominated on the 3rd Ballot, defeating the choice of conservative Republicans, former Senator Joseph France of Maryland. Senator Johnson is paired with Senate Minority leader Charles Curtis of Kansas. The selection of Senator Curtis, who has lost a great deal of his cockiness since the GOP election disaster in 1930, was made to appease conservative Republicans, but many of them upset over President Hoover’s liberal spending, have already changed allegiance to Cordell Hull’s campaign.

President Johnson meets privately with a group of influential members of Congress, who tell him bluntly that the efforts he has begun to make in favor of a federal civil rights bill in the aftermath of Birmingham must cease or his entire legislative agenda will be stopped dead in the water. “It’s your choice, Mr. President,” Senator Strom Thurmond informs Johnson. “You can have your civil rights, or you can have your Medicare, your education programs and such. But it’s one or the other, Mr. President. Push for your civil rights bill, and you won’t get another piece of legislation through Congress till the end of your presidency.”

Johnson does not yield. “Senator,” he tells Thurmond, “you want to take me on, you go right ahead and do it. Won’t be the first time a President’s had to deal with a hostile Congress. But if all you do is say no to everything--well, I can say no, too. How long d’you think it’ll be before your constituents start noticin’ how federal money’s not coming their way anymore, how the construction projects and defense contracts aren’t coming in? And who do you think they’ll blame for not delivering the goods?”

The meeting ends on a bitter note. No one doubts that if there is an open confrontation, it will be costly to both sides, yet neither side seems willing to compromise. It is not clear that there is room for compromise.
