One day before their scheduled execution, President Dwight D. eisenhower commutes the sentences of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted of spying for the Soviet Union, from death to life in prison. "The evidence that they spied for the Soviets is undeniable," Ike says, "but it was not they who gave the Soviets the secret of the atomic bomb. They deserve to spend the rest of their lives in prison, but their crime does not, in my opinion, warrant execution."

A remake of the 1942 film classic "Casablanca" premieres. As was the original, the remake is set in the French colony of Morocco in December 1941, with World War II raging on freedom in retreat. The role of exiled nightclub-casino operator Rick Blaine (formerly Humphrey Bogart) goes to Kevin Spacey. French police prefect Captain Louis Renault, as in the original (Claude Rains), is played by an Englishman, Rowan Atkinson. Bob Hoskins plays rival nightclub owner Ferrari (formerly Sydney Greenstreet). Ill-fated black marketeer Ugarte (Peter Lorre) is played by former "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" Ferengi Armin Shimmerman. Nazi investigator Major Strasser (Conrad Veidt) is played by Rutger Hauer. Liam Neeson, who previously fought Nazis in "Schindler's List," takes on the Paul Heinreid role of Czech freedom fighter Victor Laszlo. And in a stunning bit of casting, the part of Ilsa Lund (once Ingrid Bergman), Norwegian wife of Victor and ex-girlfriend of Rick, is played by Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis. The film is a smash, and makes more money on its first weekend than the original made in all its releases -- though not when inflation is factored in, of course.

At a field in Waterloo, the French Emperor Napoleon faces off against an allied force of British, Dutch, Belgians and Prussians willing to prevent his return to power. The Battle begins at 11:00am with the french shelling the British lines. The allied plan (devised by the Duke of Wellington, Commander of the Allied forces) is to hold off the French long enough for the main Prussian force to arrive under Marshall Blucher. Here is how the Battle progresses. 11:00am The french bombard Hougoumont farm and lay down unrelentless fire on the main British lines. The British artillery respond, shelling the french lines. This lasts until the afternoon. Midday: Prince Jerome orders an attack on the British garrisson at Hougoumont farm. A brutal battle begins here that will last the rest of the day. 1:30pm Marshall Ney begins a bombardment of Wellingtons centre line. This lasts for half an hour. 2:00pm Marshall Ney advances his columns into the main British line. The Kings German leigon begins a furious defence that will last the whole day. As French soldiers approach the british lines, they are driven back by a continous volley of fire. The brutal battles continue on until a lull in the fighting at 3:00pm. 3:00pm The British garrisson has almost been forced out of Hougoumont farm. The Battle in this sector has cost around 50% casulties on both sides. 3:30pm An army arrives at the Battle, but it is uncertain whether it is the Prussians under Marshall Blucher of the French under Marshall Groucy. As the army approaches, the allies realize in horror that Marshall groucy has arrived providing the French with massive reinforcements. 4:00pm The armies of Marshalls Groucy and Ney combine and commit to a massive assualt on Wellingtons centre line. They are driven back twice, but the overwhelming numbers finally break the British centre. Wellington is forced to flee with his main body of troops. Meanwhile, panic has caught the allies all over the line as news of Groucys arrival is spread. 5:00pm The Allied forces are now in disorganized retreat. Those who have stayed behind have no support and are easily overrun. Many men now throw down their guns and flee. The Wellingtons army has been broken. 5:45pm Marshall Blucher arrives, but too late. The British have been cleared from the field. However, the Prussians attack into Napoleons seemingly undefended back lines. However, this contains the Emperors elite troops who fight with ferocity to check the Prussians. 6:10pm Marshalls Ney and Groucy now confront Blucher with the full might of the French armies. It does not take long to defeat the surrounded, outnumbered and weakened Prussian army. Blucher is forced to flee for his life and the retreating Prussians leave many to be take prisoner. Napoleon is victorious. The estimated casulties of this day are around 28,000 British-Dutch killed and wounded. 25,000 Prussians killed or wounded. 18,000 french killed or wounded.

She says that they, in a manner similar to George Pullman, took percautions to ensure that would not happen. She doesn't reveal exactly what they had done. But it involved the urn encased in a one foot thick layer of concrete. Then the encased urn was placed in a steel cage. The cage was then set in a pit, and then concrete was poured over the cage. After the concrete was dried for a while, a wire mesh was placed around the concrete, followed by half a dozen steel beams. Finally, another layer of concrete, about three feet thick was placed around the urn. Before going on air, the staffer had commented that this guy wasn't going to get up and come back.

They also sign into the Sphere in a matter of days, prompting President Reagan to state that any further incursion by the Sphere into the territories of the Western Hemisphere will be treated as an invasion of the United States by Japan. It is understood by diplomatic back channels that Peru, Ecuador, and Chile are aligned with the Sphere now and that the Colombian civil war involves parties that may give that country eventually. Also, the sudden death of Tokyo's PM Masayoshi Ohira, but the resulting rise of Zenko Suzuki to power impresses the world and gives the Diet its greatest single-party majority in decades. South Africa sees the beginning of the violent "Dowager offensive" launched from the Communist section, named for the Empress of China who ordered all foreigners killed on this day exactly eighty years ago. The rallying cry around the world will be "one million dead in one hundred hours", noting that the sheer visciousness of the offensive will see approx. 934,542 military casualties (exact numbers will never be known and estimates range as high as 1.2 million) between the three sides. Reports of wholesale slaughter by all three sides are rampant, especially in the Sphere section where Communist sympathizers in Kwazulu-Natal are killed outright in preemptive strikes. Boeing unveils the design of the "Washington" spacecraft, while Japan decides to publish theirs as well (ironically derived from the plans for a 1969 Mars expedition from the recently deceased Von Braun). http://www.astronautix.com/craft/imis1968.htm http://www.astronautix.com/craft/vonn1969.htm Argentina and Paraguay begin voicing the possibility of an independent, unified South America after the Europeans begin mentioning the same possibility for their continent. Europe will not leave the American orbit but it would give them much greater leverage at the table. At the 25th "Asia Looks Forward" conference in Signapore, there is much debate about how solidly the Sphere actually is. With Chinese and Korean citizens now gaining citizenship in Japan along with the rapid development of the economies in India and Indonesia, many in Jakarta and New Delhi wonder if they would not be better on their own and out from under the eye of American spy satellites. Thailand's ongoing civil war is also proving problematic as Sphere military aid is the only thing preventing the rebels from overtaking the whole country. A proposal to cut off Hong Kong from its major source of fresh water, a reverseos osmosis plant located in China, would be jeopardized by any lack of Sphere unity, and Japan will not act unless it can get everyone on board. In the United States, the sale of personal computers accelerates and the private networks begin to appear across the country. Recent advances in computer technology are allowing civilians to own computers more powerful than anything in the USSR and all but the higher-grade military computers in the best Sphere nations. Both catch up or improve their own systems simply by purchasing top-of-the-line civilian components from the US. In Georgetown KY, the Toyota corporation decides to give enough funding to the school system to permit them to run to Sphere standards, including the teaching of Japanese as the secondary language. In less than four years time there will be many graduates who speak English, Spanish, and Japanese at full fluency or even native levels, though with moderately thick Southern accents. Sushi bars begin appearing throughout the US and American fast food begins spreading rapidly throughout Japan, India, and Vietnam. Reagan is careful not to let the trade balance get out of control for fear of being indebted to Japan or anyone else. Synthetic oil technology in Japan also reaches new heights with the development of a fuel that burns 40% cleaner and twice as long, along with car engines that get over 130 MPH despite having performance characteristics comparable to the muscle cars of the 1960s. John DeLorean opens a large car factory in Ramallah in the West Bank, hoping to promote a car that combine the best technologies of several different companies and countries.

00:07 - Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Pettigrew announces that the Canadian Government has voted to declare war on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

01:30 - In an outdoor news conference televised live around the world, North Korean General Soon Oh-Tek extols the abilities of North Korea's air defenses:

Not even America's much-touted 'stealth' aircraft are safe from our defenses. Our radars can easily see them, and we have shot down every plane they have tried to send against us.
Unbeknownst to the general, the cameras catch a formation of four aircraft over his shoulder. Two are clearly F-117A Stealth attack aircraft, while the other two resemble undersized B-2 bombers. A third "mini B-2" flies over some minutes later. None are fired upon.

02:27 - After scoring her fourth air-to-air victory over North Korea, Lt. Commander Katrina Bryce assists in one of the highest-profile defections of the war:

*** TRANSCRIPT BEGINS ***

BRYCE: Starbase, Trekker One. You ain't gonna believe this shit. I just saw a North Korean shoot down his own wingman.

ENTERPRISE: Say again, Trekker One?

BRYCE: This guy just shot down his wingman. He's not engaging us, he's engaging the other North Koreans!

(Pause)

HARRIS: Trekker One, this is United States Actual.

BRYCE: Sir!

HARRIS: Do you think this guy could be a defector?

BRYCE: It sure looks like it, Sir. I've got a perfect shot on him, but he's not evading.

(Pause)

HARRIS: Trekker One, United States Actual. You are authorized to make radio contact. What's he flying?

BRYCE: MiG-29, Sir.

(Pause)

HARRIS: If he's amenable... bring him home with you.

BRYCE: Aye-aye, Sir.

*** TRANSCRIPT ENDS ***

The MiG-29 is flown by Major Han Jin-Oh, an instructor pilot at North Korea's primary flight training bases. Shepherded by LCdr. Bryce, he manages to land the MiG-29 on the deck of the Enterprise, using a crash barrier to stop.

03:00-07:00 - A flurry of diplomatic phone calls takes place between the Enterprise, the State Department in Washington, and various world capitols. When they are complete, various world leaders make plans for travel to Canberra, where an emergency summit is scheduled to begin the following Monday (6-22-2009)

11:30 – Michael and Yolanda Murphy, the parents of PFC Aaron Murphy, accept a call from the President and First Lady.

*** TRANSCRIPT BEGINS ***

JOHN H. HARRIS: Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, I know it doesn’t lessen the impact of what you’re obviously feeling now, but I want to tell you that we owe our lives to your son.

MICHAEL MURPHY: Thank you, Mr. President. We knew, the day he joined the Army, that he might not come home.

YOLANDA MURPHY: We really thought he’d be killed in Iraq. He served a tour there before his unit was assigned to Korea.

LINDA PARK: It’s important for you to know that he didn’t die alone.

YOLANDA MURPHY: Yes, we saw the pictures. He always said he’d probably die saving someone else. He died the way he lived, really. Boy never did have a selfish bone in his body.

JOHN H. HARRIS: I’m just sorry we can’t bring him home right away.

YOLANDA MURPHY: That’s all right, Mr. President. We know you’ll get him home as soon as you can.

MICHAEL MURPHY: In fact, we’d be honored if you could help us lay him to rest.

JOHN H. HARRIS: Sir, the honor would be mine. Right now, I don’t know how soon we’ll be able to bring him home, but I promise you that he will come home.

MICHAEL MURPHY: Thank you, Mr. President.

*** TRANSCRIPT ENDS ***

Shortly after, the photos taken of PFC Murphy's last minutes are released to the public.

12:00 - Jordan's King Abdullah II announces that Jordanian forces will be sent to Iraq to assist in peacekeeping operations, thereby freeing American troops to fight in Korea.

15:00 - Speaking to an anti-war rally in Paris, controversial filmmaker Michael Moore makes the assertion that it was not North Korea that fired nuclear missiles at US cities and installations, but US missile submarines.

16:00 - In a televised news conference, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Pettigrew explains the reasoning behind that morning's declaration of war.

While it is true that none of the nuclear weapons launched by North Korea were aimed at Canadian cities, the fact remains that a number of devices did detonate over Canadian territory. This, combined with our obligations under more than eighty treaties, obligates us to take action.
20:00 - On a special live edition of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, actress Janeane Garofalo places blame for the attack on the US, but is countered by retired US Air Force General Paul Vallely:
GAROFALO: Of course this is all George Bush's fault! If he'd just given them the reactos they asked for and the aid they needed, the North Koreans never would have attacked.

VALLELY: If he'd done that, we'd have been hit with a hundred nukes. Jimmy Carter is the one who let them build what they used against us by doing exactly what you blame Bush for not doing. And you really should be thanking President Bush for saving your life. If it weren't for him, there would have been no Pacific Missile Defense System, and you, Jon, and this entire audience would now be dead. So maybe you ought to cut the man some slack for once!

Garofalo terminates her participation in the interview, rather than give the Bush aministration any credit.

22:00 - The first embedded reporters arrive aboard the Enterprise from Japan.

The nomination of Senator Jarvis is almost derailed by Congressman Bryan, who gives a stirring speech on the free-silver issue: "You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns!
