Willy Ley and Wernher von Braun. For the last year the Mannheim facility had been held together by the brilliant but inexperienced officer Walter Dornberger. | 1915 | 745 Add An Event | The submarines are in position, some already having been on their way.
There is still no defence against submarines except trying to ram them or having small ships fire quick-firing guns at them, but this means they are obliging enough to surface first. The Americans have not "Dazzled" any ships yet to throw off torpedo aimers. Four troop ships are sunk in New York bay and three cruisers, through inexperience. It was thought the first of the patrol had struck a mine, and the others stopped to assist. Cargo ships with munitions are sunk off New York and Boston, paralyzing the export trade of companies and shippers. One munition ship explodes in a collosal explosion. Only if convoys are organised, and the British admiralty is totally opposed to it, will trade continue, and even then convoys and escorts will be attacked. Washington Woodrow Wilson is studying the news reports. The Lusitania thing is beginning to go wrong and the press and congressmenn have started ask questions, even if they voted for war in the first place. The news from Europe is appalling. he had thought the war was nearly over, and there would be some fighting but not too heavy casualties. Now it looks he'll have to fight a naval war in Europe, doing the British work for them. Convoys across the Atlantic will be slowed up with submarines and surface raiders. The Imperator's daring escape and the capture of a troop convoy are Sir Francis Drake style stories. There is the photgraph of Albert Ballin congratulating the crew and officers of the Imperator. 50,000 American troops have been captured without firing a shot, and senior officers on board will be housed in the upper-class prison camp run by the Crown prince on the Berlin Race Course. Already the incidents are being referred to as singeing President Wilson's Beard. Berlin Falhenhayn knew his advice would not be well recieved by his Soverieign and Supreme Warlord. The pupose of the emergency meeting was to urgently find new strategies which would win the war swiftly before the Americans could deploy. Now with Tirpitz and his naval staff sitting in the corner confidently, he knew something striking was expected after Tirtitz decicive victories at sea. Falkenhayn believed in small scale operations with limited objectives. His operation on the Narew in east Prussia was rejected. Hindenburg and Ludendorf would have their Napoleonic strategy in the east. There were reports of American troops to be deployed to assist the Russians. The German army would strike further east, then south to link up with the Austro-Hungarians at the pripet marshes and Brest-Litovsk. The Austro-Hungarians would advance north and east th the pripet marshes, the two pinchers would trap the Russian armies, the grand-Duke Nicholas and his staff, so conveniently still deployed in Poland. His other scheme for limited attacks on the forts at Sedan and the French would attack to recapture then was equally abruptly rejected as too cautioous. Falkenhayn knew as Tirtpitz smiled back at him that his dismissal was imminent and he remembered the fate of his predecessor von Moltke. "Sire", he began, "the purpose was to take up positions that the enemy could not let go and would repeatedly attack to recapture. To ensure success for the breakthrough in the east the special weapons - gas shells of the new phosgene and mustard gas should be deployed. They will ensure a rapid breakthrough. AT Sedan, I suggest feigned attacks north of the forts, the French will send their army and possibly the Americans as well to defend the strategic fortress and there will be the desired battle of Anilhilation or Second Cannae that is planned for. Again the special weapons can be deployed for the final battle." He could see that this idea pleased his sovereign as well as the crown prince whose army it was. meanwhile the newly popular psychological warfare experts recommended a set of War Aims to be declared. They had not yet done so in reply to Wilson's request. 1) Self determination for Ireland 2) A restoration of the Polish kindgdom based on Russian Grand Ducal Poland. Something must be done with it, and a king acceptable to the Polish people found. 3) The Kaiser and the Austro-Hungarian Emperor would prevail upon the Sultan to allow autonomy and Jewish settlement in Palestine. These were designed they explained to appeal to liberals in France, Britain and America, and were adopted. The Kaiser was rather relishing these bold developments. America had important democrat voting constituencies of Irish Americans hostile to the British Empire, Poles and Jewish immigrants. Meanwhile the Large Aircraft programme was to be given the highest priority. Some of these designs would be able to reach America. Meanwhile the programmes for large and height-climber Zeppelins, larger bombers and large flyingboats were to be given all out attention, including seaplane/aircraft tenders for the navy as the eyes of the fleet. The two large cargo submarines intended to carry freight to America would now be used to send arms to the Irish Nationalists for an uprising in Ireland, a task much easier now they had command of the sea. perhaps some German troops could be sent? Meanwhile dipolmatic work was to be done offering Romania Bessarabia from Russia, approaching Spain over an alliance, which would recover the Spanish Antilles for Spain - Cuba and Puerto Rico - and from their occupation as American client states. A fleet of vessels are sent to the United Kingdom with supplies for, what many New Zealanders, still view as the homeland. Delegations are sent to Vietnam, Korea, Cambodia and the other Asian/Euro axis nations instructing them to send all available aid and manpower to the stricken continent of North America and also to the USSR.
