Arab terrorists launch an attack on Lincoln's Tomb at approximately 10:15 am using a varied array of explosives placed in the back of three cars. Over four hundred men, women and children are killed in the blast, which completely destroys the tomb. Three hours later, one of the terrorists behind the attack is captured just outside of Peoria. When questioned, it's revealed that Arab terrorists have always despised Abraham Lincoln because of his view on slavery and see him as one of the reasons why Arab and Muslim nations were forced to largely ban the practice in the mid to late 20th century. Immediately, the US is put on Red Alert and thousands of guards are placed nationwide at the gravesites of other prominent Abolitionists and Civil Rights leaders. Five thousand alone are stationed at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Atlanta. Around the world, other countries put guards at the gravesites of their civil rights leaders and anti-slavery advocates. This will remain the practice for almost a full year.

With Hitler installed as Chancellor, the German High Command gets its opportunity to tear up the Treaty of Versailles and begin rearming the country. Believing that the German military establishment can hold Hitler's excesses in check, and unable to resist the appeal to his gentlemanly honor, he accepts.
On reporting to Berlin he is introduced to Major Erwin Rommel, who has some revolutionary ideas regarding tank warfare. The two talk at length and become close personal friends as well as professional colleagues. The two of them formulate the first combined-arms doctrine, with strike aircraft supporting tank columns in attacks against fortifications and infantry. Another ranking member of the General Staff, Karl Doenitz, is uninterested in expanding the discussion to include aircraft carriers, insisting that U-boats can ensure victory on the seas. However, Grand Admiral Erich Raeder does read Richthofen's/Rommel's studies and decides to act. Raeder convinces Hitler, and orders are issued to construct six aircraft carriers for the Kriegsmarine.

The Rodney King Riots are finally over. Following nearly 3 weeks of rioting and martial law in Southern California, metropolitan Los Angeles has begun to return to normal. California Governor Willie Brown and President Rhodes survey the damage via helicopter. The damage is extensive, with more than 25% of the cities of Watts, Los Angeles, Compton, Riverside, and Long Beach either burned or condemned and damage estimated at $4.7 Billion.
One of the deadiest riots in US history, spurned by the the aquittal of LAPD officers accused of beating motorist Rodney King to death in 1991, claimed the lives of more than 300 people and left more than 10,000 injured.
Following the Riots, President Rhodes names a blue-ribbon commission to examine race in the United States. The Senate also opens up hearings into the causes and accountability of the Riots. Per Executive Order, flags on U.S. federal buildings remain at half-mast for three months.
While the Rhodes administration is praised by members of the mainstream media for his quick response to the crisis, public opinion is less forgiving. For the first time in his administration, Rhodes' approval rating drops below 45 percent.

With the surrender of Germany, the final Grand Alliance conference is held in the ruins of Berlin itself, which has been divided between Britain, France, and the US on the western side with the USSR and Byzantine Empire on the eastern side. Yugoslavia, Albania, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Tchad, eastern and central Niger, Cyprus, the Caucasus, and Kurdistan are officially recognized as Byzantine territories. Stalin agrees to a cease-fire along the Byzantine/Soviet borders until plebiscites can be held in Romania, the Ukraine, the Russian areas north of the Caucasus and south of/inclusive with Stalingrad, Hungary, Czechloslovakia, and Poland. V2 rockets and other advanced weapons are being distributed as best as the intelligence services of their respective countries can acquire them. Eritrea is placed under Ethiopean control until a plebiscite cna be held there while Italian Somaliland becomes an Ethiopean territory outright. Japan continues trying to negotiate a surrender, hoping to retain Korea and perhaps Taiwan along with a few small Pacific bases it held before the war. Rumors about an American super-weapon have begun spreading through the international spy community, and the Byzantines realize that their failure to catch this directly means their intelligence service needs a dramatic overhaul. In Italy, liberation reveals an east-west fault dividing the country. In the north, a group calling itself Lega Nord begins immediate political organization and calls for the seperation of Northern Italy (from Florence on up) from the rump of the South. They believe that recovery will come much faster on their own than if they had to support the Southern Italians and Sicilians. This creates a serious problem for the Southern Italians, and many wonder if Rome should not come back under the control of Constantinople as it did during the time of Justinian. Emperor George is diagnosed with inoperable cancer, accelerating the training of his son Constantine XIV to ascension of the Byzantine throne. Though only 17 years old, the boy is the first true mixed-blood emperor to come to the throne, and the loyalty of the Bulgarians seems immovable with one of thteir own on the throne. A Ridiculous-class Air Carrier manages to catch the jetstream over Anatolia and proves stable enough to ride it at over 300 MPH. The limited crew on board thrill to the ability to move across Asia at fighter-like speeds. They are almost shot down when they reach Signapore until the British remember that the Japanese have virtually abandoned airship technology. At 2500 feet long and almost 800 feet tall, there are no known hangars outside of Byzantine territory that can house the bloody thing, but with an ability to climb over 12,000 feet and cruise under its own power at 150 MPH, its potential force projection via 85 fighter aircraft or 42 light bombers or any mix where 1 light bomber replaces 2 fighters or 1 intermediate bomber replaces 4 fighters are astonishing. Developments in air-to-air missiles also allow the airships to knock down enemy aircraft from up to seven miles away via fly-by-wire technology, making any fighter aircraft vulnerable to counterattack. General G.S. Patton wonders whether he should continue a campaign with German help against the Russians or the Greeks, fearing that both are serious competitors for American hegemony. His comments and the ascension of President Truman will sour relations between the three major powers, even as the first United Nations Security Council sits with the US, USSR, UK, China, and the Byzantine Empire as major powers.

Horace Greeley and Wilson debate in Albany, New York. The primary focus is foreign policy. Greeley seeks peace with the Confederacy, avoiding the tensions that the American Party makes no effort to evade. Wilson responds that the US can't "go belly up and give in, like your party did in the War of Secession. We can't let the South sit on top of us." Neither man argues with the fact that industrialization is vital to maintaining dominance in the Western Hemisphere. The King Leopold II incident also comes up. Greeley wants to return him to the French government, but Wilson knows that to do so would be admitting that the US is subservient to Europe. Greeley admits that he doesn't really care what France thinks, and giving up the King would just "keep French affairs in France and Mexico, not the United States." Greeley counters by criticizing the Empire Alliance. He declares that this alliance first devised by Sherman is "also accepting the rule of foreign powers, only weaker ones." Greeley's platform gains significant ground thanks to the debate.

Rome and Berlin: The parliaments of these two countries were changed in a manner reminscient of the transformation of the Russian parliament. Only this time, it was the left-wing parties that left after the right-wing parties refused to endorse their legislation: the breaking of ties with Canada's Conservative government, which had endorsed the invasion of the former USA. The right-wing parties called for massive protests in the streets to force the Canadian ambassador to be recalled to Ottawa. The protests were finished by the 30th of May, when the Canadian ambassadors to Germany and Italy were recalled back to Ottawa for "safety." The Italian and German governments called for an alliance called the Rome-Berlin Axis. That deal was signed in early June. The countries renamed themselves the Fascist Republic of Italy and the Fascist Republic of Germany. So, the world was gradually turning back from the world of 2041 to the world of the year 1941.

Horatian meets with the Bishop of Rome, though the former is an Arian Christian instead of an Athanasian. They reach an agreement, known as the Dual Imperium, which empowers Horatian to command the armies and major institutions of state as Patrician of the Romans and Master of Soldiers, while the Bishop heads the Athanasian church in Italy, sits in the reorganized Senate, is regarded as First Citizen of Rome, wears imperial insignia, exercises a limited veto over appointment of civil servants, has a palace at public expense, draws a public salary, is exempt from trial by any body lower than the Senate itself, and is allowed to keep a palace guard of 2,000 men separate from the regular army. Horatian governs the state, however, in that he appoints all civil and military officers, issues edicts that are legally binding, calls and dismisses the Senate at his own discretion, can veto Senatorial decrees, also wears imperial insignia, draws a public salary, wears a laurel crown and a purple robe, controls the state secret service, holds the public pursestrings, chooses local prefects, and conducts the foreign policy of the Italian state.

The Michigan and Maryland Primaries are tomorrow. If either Governor Ronald Reagan of California or Governor George Wallace of Alabama can take them both, he will be the unquestioned front-runner for the Republican nomination for President. Both men are campaigning at shopping centers: Wallace in Laurel, Maryland, about halfway between Baltimore and Washington; and Reagan in Southgate, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Wallace ends his appearance without incident. Reagan is not so lucky. As he is approaching his car, a man pulls a gun and starts firing. Reagan is shoved into the car, which speeds away. The gunman is himself shot by one of Reagan's bodyguards, and dies at the scene. He is identified as Arthur Bremer, a 21-year-old Milwaukee native who recently quit his job as a janitor. Bremer's journal will be found, revealing that he wanted to shoot one of the Presidential candidates, either Reagan, Wallace, or President Richmond Flowers. He figured Flowers, who became President because of the assassination of Hubert Humphrey, was unlikely to be an easy target. He had been at a Wallace rally two days earlier in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Reagan is found to be bleeding, and is taken to a hospital, where one bullet is removed. He is expected to recover quickly.
