The Tampa Bay Devil Rays open their season the same way Washington closed 1993, although with attendance down 20% all over baseball, the franchise, in its new location, has only a little more chance than Washington does of succeeding.
A noted columnist wrote this of Washington's 3rd try at baseball, soon after the revival of fan interest - first from Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig's consuecutive game streak, then fromt he small market Indians beating the small market Reds in the Series in 1995, and finally from the 67 home run season by Mark McGwire - and 64 by Sosa in 1998:
"Did baseball ever work in Washington? Once it did, for a while, when they had WAlter Johnson, and it was a simpler time. It could have the second time, if they'd had a winner, as indeed it did for a third time, during the early 1980s.
"But it was only for a short time, because the fans of WAshington are not the kind to support a team no matter what, when Baltimore is close by. They demand winners, just like the REdskins were for so long. It is too small a market with too little history to keep a team functioning simply on reverence of the past. They required a committment to winning that no owner is able to make unless that owner is a Steinbrenner or something close.
"Places like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and so on can support clubs even now. But in this era, when small market teams will go generations before contending, the era of Washington baseball is over." Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |
