The world has turned over many times since I took the oath on the plain at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that, 'Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.' And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Good Bye." President Robert Kennedy taught us that 'People should not be afraid of their governments, and a just government would never have to be afraid of its people.' If a citizen of this country does not like what the government is doing, he or she can send that government a message, not with bullets, but with ballots. We learned that in 1992, and in 1994. If you want a change in your government, it can be done, both peacefully and fairly. And these angry voices know it. They claim credit for the changes in the 1994 election. Well, if they keep this up, they will be responsible for a change in the 1996 election, but perhaps not the change they want." Clinton's speech seems to stop the downward slide of his Administration. From 2,000 miles away, he hears the explosion at the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He tells his wife and fellow Daily News reporter Chloe Sullivan that he's got to go. Within minutes, she sees him as Superman, trying to pull people out of the rubble. But it's too late, as 168 people are dead. None of them would have been saved unless he had been there at the time of the explosion. The scene of an Oklahoma City fireman cradling a toddler in his arms, as Superman puts his hand on his shoulder, is one of the saddest images in American history. Soon, editorials appear in newspapers and on TV news broadcasts, asking if the American people have become too dependent on Superman, or even if his presence on Earth is holding humanity back, or causing some other kind of harm. Clark doesn't like this, but there's not much he can do -- not without revealing his identity. Chloe, however, writes a column defending him, titled "Why the World Needs a Superman." It wins a Pulitzer Prize. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |
