| 1954 | 1299 Add An Event | The War Between the States is published. Author Shelby Foote has written a spectacular "alternate history," imagining what might have happened had one man thought differently. In his novel, General Robert E. Lee chooses to command the armies not of the United States of America, but the Confederate States of America. The result is a four-year civil war that brings about the near-destruction of the American South, Lee's dignified defeat, and the assassination by John Wilkes Booth not of Lee, who lives until 1870 and never becomes President of the United States, but of Abraham Lincoln, who had been forced by the war to run for a second term in 1864, was swept to re-election following several Union victories, including General William Tecumseh Sherman's burning of Atlanta, and then was killed by Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington on April 14, 1865, the location and date of the actual Lee assassination. The America that follows, as described in Foote's epilogue, is one of a mostly-failed "Reconstruction," ending in a re-established racial segregation and repression that harms black Americans nearly as much as slavery had. It is a chilling tale, and the what-if novel will win the 37-year-old Foote the Pulitzer Prize for Literature.

He later tours the evacuation area by helicopter, although the helicopter does not land.
Carter's speech does a great deal to calm the American public in general , although panic and public disorder remain a problem closer to the meltdown site (especially in the Philadelphia area) until the aforementioned decontamination stations are set up. The Canadian government requests that no American-flag vessels land on the northern shore of Lake Erie or along the St. Lawrence Seaway without either documentation that the vessel has not made port in Pennsylvania since 3/27/79 or certification that the vessels and crews have been decontaminated at an official decontamination station. | 1954 | 4117 Add An Event | "The War Between the States" is published. Author Shelby Foote has written a spectacular "alternate history," imagining what might have happened had one man thought differently. In his novel, General Robert E. Lee chooses in March 1861 to command the armies not of the United States of America, but the Confederate States of America. The result is a four-year civil war that brings about the near-destruction of the American South, Lee's dignified defeat, and the assassination by John Wilkes Booth not of Lee, who lives until 1870 and never becomes President of the United States, but of Abraham Lincoln, who had been forced by the war to run for a second term in 1864, was swept to re-election following several Union battlefield victories, including General William Tecumseh Sherman's burning of Atlanta, and then was killed by Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington on April 14, 1865, the location and date of the actual Lee assassination. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event

| 2009 | 1640 Add An Event | In an interview with The Weekly Standard, former President George W. Bush is asked about the comments made by Senator Kerry.
It's funny, actually. Senator Kerry said the same thing about me. Now, I admit, I'm not the most articulate man in the world. I've misturned a phrase now and then, but that sure as hell didn't make me incompetent. The President could step a bit to the right on a few issues, but overall, I think he's doing a fine job. He actually reminds me a bit of Calvin Coolidge. He's steady, quiet, yet fights for what he believes in. If the Federation Party hadn't existed, we'd have loved to have had him in our party." Also, on this date, Baen Books announces the publication of Author-in-Chief: The Collected Science Fiction of John H. Harris. It will include most of the stories sold to Asimov's, as well as early drafts of chapters from Earthforce. | Previous Event Next Event

| 1961 | 4146 Add An Event | An uprising on the island of Cuba is put down by U.S. Marines and the Air Force. The rebel leader, Fidel Castro, is arrested and executed. On the U.S. mainland, there is another execution, this one of a subversive writer. His name is Rodman Edward Serling, a Jew from Binghamton, New York. He has written a book titled "The Twilight Zone," an "alternate history" in which he imagines that Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not die of polio in 1921, but rather was elected President in 1932, instead of Newton Baker, and led "the free world" to victory in World War II, along with Britain and its Empire, French rebels, and the Soviet Union, defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. He closed his improbable novel with these words: "Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man -- that state is obsolete. A case to be filed under M, for 'Mankind' -- in the Twilight Zone." Serling had the book published in Britain, but even there, it has been suppressed. He is 36 years old. When asked if he has any last words, he says, "I have been traveling through another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A dimension where you, the tyrants do not exist. You have brought me back to your dimension. And now, you send me back to mine. It's a good life." With this, the firing squad does its... uh... duty. | 1961 | 4189 Add An Event | Bay of Pigs invasion begins, as 1,500 Cuban exiles storm the beach at Bahia de Cochinos. U.S. government supporters of the invasion had assured President Kennedy that once the exiles were ashore, the Cuban army would mutiny against Castro and the Cuban people would rise in support of their exile “liberators.” U.S. troops in Cuba. Within hours, however, it is clear that nothing of the sort is happening and that, absent direct U.S. intervention, the exiles will be overwhelmed. Fearing that this will lead not only to the humiliation of the United States, whose sponsorship of the exile invaders is an open secret, but to political disaster for the Democratic Party, Kennedy orders that air support be provided to the invasion force “commencing immediately.” In a live national TV broadcast that night, he reveals that in addition, he has directed that 15,000 Marines be dispatched to Cuba to “aid in the liberation of that imprisoned island from Communist tyranny,” with more troops to follow as necessary, and sharply warns that any attempt by “any foreign power” to interfere with this mission will be considered an act of war against the United States. Privately, the President is seething. He believes that the CIA and Pentagon either bungled their intelligence work or deliberately misled him to make sure he went through with a military intervention they had helped create under his predecessor. Nevertheless, he feels he now has no choice but to, as he tells his aide Ted Sorenson, “see this goddamned thing through to victory.” Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |
