Plans to take the RMS Olympic out of service, and scrap her are abandoned. What remains of the White Star Line is purchased by the wealthy American businessman Joseph P. Kennedy. On Kennedy's orders, the Olympic is completely remodeled and refurbished, along with her larger sister ship, RMS Britannic. Both sisters of the ill-fated Titanic are an instant success with travelers, and remain in service throughout the Second World War as troop transports. At the end of the Second World War, Kennedy turns the Olympic into a well-preserved tourist attraction while he takes the extraordinary step of using the aging, but still impressive Brittanic as his own personal yacht.

4 men meet in a darkened pub in Boston Mass. They are former Vice President Aaron Burr in disguise, Attorney General Caeser Rodney, Boston shipping magnate Lawrence Todd and a fairly disheveld army officer from New York named Tyler Cole. The subject of the meeting is sitting in Washington D.C. wishing he was back home in Virginia. The New England man is enraged about the embargo act and is willing to pay handsomely to send loose the Virginians Mortal Coil. The officer is willing to do so for compensation. Mr. Rodney promises that once the deal is done, he will use his influence on Vice President Clinton to end the Embargo and reinstate free trade to England. Mr. Burr thinks Clinton doesn't have the guts to undue such lofty Policy and perhaps he should also get a better view of the daisies. From underneath them. Say 6 feet. The quartet agree and leave Cpt. Cole to finish with the details. Mr. Burr was to leave for a trip west but had just now decided to wait for the festivities. Some miles away, the current President was thinking about mutton or mushroom soup.

JFK is encouraged to hold a speech in Washington, D.C. to address the "problems of the transition" from "military life" to "civilian life" to the former Vietnam Veterans and to encourage them to seek a better more meaningful life within society. His "speech" becomes a huge success as it motivates most to do just that.
By May,1968 President Kennedy tells his brother Bobby not to run in '68. He does so any way. On June 1, 1968 the former Attorney General is assassinated in the state of Oregon, while campaigning for president. The result is that Nixon and the Republicans win a close November election

Sparta finally surrenders to the Athenians after a long siege. The dyarchy (dual kingship) is abolished, the Apella (Spartan Assembly) is given real power, the Gerousia (high council) is weakened, and the ephors (leaders of the Apella elected annually) become the heads of the Laconian (Spartan) state. The helots are emancipated and they are the Perieoci (middle class) are given the franchise and full citizenship, along with all other previously disenfranchise Spartan men. This is bad news for the Spartan women, who because of their cruelty toward the helots and other lower-class Spartans, are none too popular with them. Athens is now the dominant polis in Greece.

The USFL announces its fall 1984 schedule and where its 16 teams will play. The answer to what will happen next is obvious - if the USFL plays its cards right, it could force a merger, bringing the NFL to 32, maybe even 36 teams, though 40 seems a bit too much. If the fans find some reason to follow the NFL more and the USFL folds because of terrible mismanagement, then there is likely to still be a merger of four or so clubs, like with the old All-American Football Conference, which the Browns and 49ers came from. And, if things go poorly enough, the confusion could be such that it could really harm pro football as a sport; not kill it, for it’s too popular, but at least put it at the level of hockey in the U.S..

President Harris makes the rounds of the Sunday talkshows. On Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace brings up the religion angle:

WALLACE: "Mr. President, church leaders have denounced what they call your lack of piousness. There were no prayers at your innaugural, you've never been to church as President, you disagree with the recent Texas Supreme Court decision about the Ten Commandments and you rarely even mention God. I guess the question is: Are you an atheist?"

HARRIS: "I'm what I call a unitarian agnostic. While I believe in a higher power, I don't believe in organized religion. There's too much dogma, too much ritual. I believe that all religions have a piece of the truth, but that all of those pieces, past, present, and future, make up an infinitesimal piece of that truth. It's like a billion-piece jigsaw puzzle, but you only have ten or so pieces.

"What I really hate is prosletyzing, the belief that one must spread the word to everyone around you, whether they want to hear it or not. I was raised a Christian fundamentalist, but the hypocricy of organized religion soured me to the idea by the time I was seventeen or so. Everyone is free to believe what they want, just don't try to shove it down my throat."

On Meet the Press, Tim Russert concentrates on the President's political agenda:

RUSSERT: "Mr. President, in your State of the Union speech, you said that we need to replace a lot of our military equipment and revive what has been widely recognized as a money pit. How do you intend to pay for it all?"

HARRIS: "I have to take exception to your calling the Venture Star program a money pit. Yes, it has cost more than expected, but so did the Space Shuttle, which is getting more expensive as it ages. It is in our national interest to have a replacement for the shuttle, because as we saw in 1986 and 2003, the Space Shuttle fleet will suffer losses, and we simply can't afford to have it shrink to a single spacecraft."

RUSSERT: "But how do you pay for it all?"

HARRIS: "We end the scourge of pork barrel spending. We end riders that slip expenditures through under the radar. Before the New Deal, Federal money was exceedingly rare when it came to local projects. Today, it's expected. We have to reverse that. Local and state governments have to start funding their own projects again, and stop looking to the Federal government to do it for them. This will free up more than enough money to pay for the equipment our military and space program needs, as well as everything else the Federal government should be doing."

On Face the Nation, Bob Schieffer brings up the Moore nomination:

SCHIEFFER: Mr. President, conservatives in the Senate are vowing to fight the nomination of Patrick Moore as head of the EPA, while liberals are applauding your choice. Whatever made you pick one of the founders of Greenpeace?

HARRIS: It's not that he's one of the founders of Greenpeace. What earned my respect was that he abandoned Greenpeace when it became politicized and started using scientifically-unsound scare tactics. I first saw Mr. Moore on a show, hosted by Penn and Teller, which debunks various social myths. That particular episode was about the environmental movement and global warming."

SCHIEFFER: "So you don't think global warming is a problem?"

HARRIS: "Oh, it's a problem, sure. It's just not the imminent, world-ending catastrophe the tree-huggers, and I use that term deliberately, claim it is. And before you ask, I apply the term 'tree-hugger' to those who protest environmental issues without understanding those issues, those who don't take the time to really understand the science behind it. Most of these people couldn't care less about the environment. They've been blinded by the politics of it all. These groups are more interested in tearing down our industrial base than they are in using it to achieve their goals. They simply can't get it through their rhetoric-addled brains that it takes advanced technology to fix the problems created by more elementary technology. Patrick Moore, as a founder of Greenpeace, is someone who can educate these people away from the extremism they've been seduced into."

George Stephanopoulos, on ABC's This Week, asks about the attempted assassination of Governor MacCann:

STEPHANOPOULOS: "Mr. President, how do you respond to reports that Governor MacCann's life was saved by a pentagram necklace he was wearing at the time?"

HARRIS: "It's no different than any other story about jewelry saving someone from a bullet. There are a myriad of such stories throughout history."

STEPHANOPOULOS: "Did you know Governor MacCann was a pagan?"

HARRIS: "No, and I don't care one way or another. A person's religion is none of anyone else's business unless you try to shove it down someone's throat. It wouldn't matter if MacCann worshipped the Ty-D-Bowl Man. My opinion of him is unchanged." While this infuriates religious leaders, it actually provides a bump in his approval ratings, which are the highest since the Reagan administration.

General Amedeo Guillett, and plans Operation Punicum: The drive on Berlin from bases only recently taken in southernmost Czechloslovakia. It involves three phases: 1) push north, take Prague and Bratislava, 2) move north along the Oder and take Breslau while trying to cut Berlin off from its Eastern armies, and finally 3) capture Berlin itself. If possible, extend this to Phase 3a and cut Germany in half by driving along the Oder river to the Baltic. This would leave Bavaria free but open up central and northern Germany to conquest while liberating much of western Poland and the whole of Czechloslovakia.

New York Daily News sportswriter Phil Pepe publishes "The Curse of Hal Chase," his history of the New York Yankees. He speculates that Chase, a Yankee first baseman then hailed as one of the best players in baseball, conspired with gamblers to lose the 1910 World Series, and suggests that since that dark moment in baseball history, the Yankees have been cursed. The Yankees have won 14 Pennants since then, but no World Series since 1906. Though Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, such Yankee stars as Waite Hoyt, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle have been kept out. Pepe also points out that the Yankees had the chance to sign such luminaries as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Reggie Jackson, but didn't. And, of course, the premature deaths of Gehrig, Lyman Bostock and Thurman Munson are discussed, as are the injuries that ended the careers of 1960s Yankee stars Mantle, Roger Maris, Elston Howard, Bobby Richardson and Tony Kubek. The book is a best-seller, based in large part on its final chapter, detailing the crushing defeat in last year's World Series to the crosstown Mets, with the wild pitch of Al Holland and the error of Don Mattingly giving the Mets Game 6 when the Yankees had the Series all but won.

President duPont gives a major address to the nation. He says that U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Syria in stages over the course of the year. He admits that their presence is actually hurting the people of that fledgling democracy as much as it's helping them. "As the Syrian military and police forces continue to step up," he says, "our forces will stand down." But he reminds the American people that this is more than just a fight against an evil regime that was sponsoring terrorist activity. "This is a war on terror itself. And while it must be won, it is highly unlikely that it will be a short struggle. Therefore, I shall do what only Theodore Roosevelt before me has done, and seek a third term as your President." The nation is stunned: Except for Syria, they see the struggle as mainly an abstraction, while the recession is something they see and feel every day, and here is this very conservative President asking for more power so he can solve a problem they thought had been solved by the deposition of the Assad regime. duPont's approval rating, which had been a whopping 86 percent at the height of the war, is now less than half that: 39 percent. Several potential Democratic candidates for 1992 chose not to run, fearing duPont was unbeatable. Several candidates, including some unexpected candidates, will now get into the race.

Event Date: 06-09-1954 McCarthy, feeling bruised by his treatment at the hands of Army special counsel Joseph N. Welch of the Boston law firm Hale & Boggs, violates a pre-hearing agreement and accuses a young lawyer at that firm of Communist sympathies. When Welch scolds him, asking if he “has left no sense of decency,” and tries to cut him off, McCarthy refuses to allow himself to be silenced. Instead, he demands, “By what right do you, sir, whose legal firm harbors enemies of this country, ask if I possess a sense of decency? What sense of decency is it, sir, which drives you to stand in the way of rooting out Communists wherever they may hide?”

It is a crucial moment. McCarthy is cheered by many of the onlookers in the hearing chamber, and Welch is thrown off balance. Moreover, the Wisconsin Senator comes across to the TV audiences as a bold, tough patriot, while his opponent, according to man-on-the-street interviews conducted for television over the next few days, appears “stuck-up,” “bullying” and even “whiny.” After this, talk of Joe McCarthy as a presidential candidate intensifies.

They adopted the Romance language of the Gallo-Romans while maintaining their original Frankish names and customs. The combination of the old Frankish language and the Romance language of the Gallo-Romans became the Franco-Roman language. Many Franco-Romans were still being identified as Franks despite being Romanized.

The death of Osama leads the network news that evening. Within hours, however, the Internet is buzzing with rumors that bin Laden’s demise is a Gore administration hoax concocted for political gain. These speculations are encouraged by the fact that the condition of the body as seen in TV footage makes it difficult to recognize as that of the terror mastermind.

Engineer Steve Moffitt is called by Brian Wilson about an idea the group has concocted. The Beach Boys, starting in June, will record an album in the Netherlands. Moffitt panics, fearing he has a lot of work to do. Luckily, the group has been able to squeeze in housing arrangements for them and their families, ahead of an anticipated housing shortage in Holland. But the question of where the group will record remains an issue. Brian remembers that there is still some equipment left over from his old home studio, as well as some new equipment the Beach Boys recently purchased that they haven't installed yet. He tells Moffitt to ship all of it over to Holland before the Beach Boys arrive there for recording, and to see if a studio can be set up somewhere.

By the time Britain is conquered, the Empire is organized into the areas under direct Imperial rule (Italy, the Balkans, Asia Minor, Ciscarpathia and North Africa), the several small Spanish kingdoms, the Kingdoms of Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, and the huge Frankish Kingdom of Gaul, Germany, Britain, Jutland, Outer Germany (OTL Poland, Czech Rep., Western Ukraine and Belorus). All of this is governed through the Church by the Emperor, but Kings have all sorts of special privileges and powers. The Empire is made up mainly of free farmers, who tend to be Christian except in North Africa where they are Muslim. All rural areas are attached to a major city where their Bishop resides. These cities all have a University, a Bishop who also functions as a Mayor, a free men's council that the Bishop must consult on major decisions, and a variety of social services for the poor, veterans, orphans and widows, travelers, etc. The cities also are beginning to have large workshops that produce books, textiles, metal ware, weapons, jewelery, etc. for sale and export. The Empire is a set of Kingdoms, made up of City-States, organized by a Church that doesn't care about religion.

Event Date: 04-02-1995 After several weeks of often angry debate, the Nunn Administration’s proposal for creating an anti-terrorism Internal Defense Administration is defeated in the Senate. Among the loudest voices against it has been former President Edward M. Kennedy.

Among the idea’s defenders, the most forceful has been Tennessee Senator Albert Gore. “No one is more aware than I of the dangers potentially posed by such an agency,” the Senator explains. “However, we cannot leave this nation naked to terrorist attack. Conventional police forces cannot combat terrorists effectively, and the FBI, while it has the tools, has too many other responsibilities. We need a new agency to counter this new and growing threat. I believe Congress can design one which will carry out its mission within the limits imposed by the Constitution.” Unfortunately for him, not enough of his fellow senators share that belief.

The split between Kennedy and Gore on this issue strains what had been a friendly relationship between the former President and the Senator. Ex-President Kennedy had been quietly favoring a Gore run for the presidency in 2000, but will grow cooler on the idea following this episode.
