They do have a right to go get anybody in the world for any reason. This matter was in effect handed over to civil courts so it will be handled by civil law. One although no warrant was issued, that I am aware of, he commited an act of war on behalf of/ and or aided by the Taliban government. The stress of the situation in Panama, the various labor strikes around the country, and the bickering between Secretary of State Theodore Roosevelt, Secretary of War George Dewey and Secretary of Labor William Jennings Bryan were just too much for the "Professor President." With the Vice Presidency still vacant and the 19th Amendment not scheduled to take effect for another 13 months, Roosevelt is next in line for the succession, and becomes the 28th President. At 45, he is the youngest man ever to serve as President except for Wilson. Despite being overweight, the former war hero is also far more vigorous than the Professor. With the advent of motion pictures able to capture his activities, and with phonographs able to record his voice -- advantages unavailable to Washington, Jefferson, Jackson and Lincoln -- his Presidency will go down in history as the most memorable one yet. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the retired prefect of the CDF gives a press conference from the guesthouse of the monastery he has retired to. He points to some serious problems with the current papacy. The speed with which papal decisions are made and enforced seems to negate the essential character of the Church as it was revealed at Vatican II, while it's true that the pope can act either on his own or collegialy, collegiality is asumed as a basis for the fundamental theology of the Church. He also laments the lack of theological discussion and depth in the current papacy. Responding to questions he states that the semi-official declaration of a crusade is not done according to the church's teachings about it's relation to the civil state. Responding to questions about the dissolving of the International Canon Law Society and Prof. Steins S.J.'s declaration the retired leader of the CDF states that the pope has full juridical powers to dissolve the society and that refrence to the Roman rota is contrary to canon law as that office does not have a higher authority than the pope. Concerning the matter of prof. Steins S.J. he concludes the press conference by refering to the document "Responsum ad dubium circa doctrinam in Epist. Ap.“Ordinatio Sacerdotalis” traditam" issued by the CDF on October 28, 1995 which is a response to questions about OS, he suggests that it might do some good for the reporters to actually READ a statment by the CDF every now and then. | 2005 | 2748 Add An Event | From Honduras and Nicaragua come evidence that casualties to plague in the nation have been grossly underestimated for whatever reason and that over half of the civilians in each country are either infected or dead. Costa Rican authorities take a strict "shoot-to-kill" stance on refugees and biowarfare-clad troops burn bodies as they find them. Guatemalan, El Salvadorian, and Belizian troops take the same attitude and are largely successful in containing their borders, though several border villages in Guatemala are found to be abandoned or full of the dead.
Indonesia is worse off, with an estimated 10 million dead and 65 million infected as the plague continues to decimate Java and the Tsunami-hit areas hard. India has only slightly more success in containing the disease but analysts predict that as many as 200 million Indians and 135 million Indonesians may die of the disease before it is over. Word from Japan indicates that they are collaborating with the CDC and are on the verge of developing a vaccine for both the "regular" and "SJ" strains of the bug, with release of the vaccine coming only when there are enough doses made to adequately distribute them. Japan has been very successful in isolating the plague to Hokkaido Island, where a clinic at Wakkanai is set up to isolate the patients and keep them as far from population centers as possible. Food shipments resume between Australia and Japan if only because the Japanese are having a very difficult time gearing up the high-yield hydroponic agriculture needed to feed their entire island.
In the US, another battle breaks out in Houston despite warnings of the use of lethal force to contain the inhabitants of the city and keep out all who would try to enter. Just south of the interchange of I-10 and I-610, a rolling set of armored cars and souped-up motorcycles tries to crash one of the three checkpoints being used to allow food and supplies into the city. Over 30,000 people begin attacking US troops at the checkpoint, and the situation becomes so desperate that isolated battles run over into Memorial Park. No one gets past the railroad tracks there, however, and anyone who crosses into the city itself is shot. By the end of the day, over 25,000 people are dead, and some media outlets call for an investigation of the commanding officers for not trying to reason with the crowd first. These will eventually be exonerated when traffic cameras show the civilian vehicles blazing towards the checkpoint at speeds in excess of 85 MPH down Woodway Drive in hopes of crashing through a barricade. They were unaware that the barriers had been reinforced with concrete and Rebar along with support from M1A2 Abrams tanks, some of which do nothing but circle the now-closed I-610 as a reminder to keep out of town. All other entrances and exits are patrolled by helicopters, platoons of soldiers with anti-tank weaponry, and local law enforcement officers on the other side of the wall.
Devastating tragedies like this and the need to concentrate so much law enforcement power in one area begins to take its toll as modern day bank robbers and mobile gangs take to the streets to pillage on hapless civilians in isolated areas. More than half will meet their end by well-armed civilians, another 40% will die trying to loot material from plague-ridden towns (the gangs are careful to quickly kill and burn anyone showing even the most remote signs of contamination, this ironically keeps them safe to a degree even though many have simple flu-like symptoms). CDC officials warn that these people might help re-start plague outbreaks if not quickly brought under control, and they're hoping not to top the estimted dead mark of 35 million (as 7 million are dead and 24 million are now infected). | 2011 | 1486 Add An Event | Copenhagen, Denmark:
After 2 weeks of riots, which have claimed more than a thousand lives, police and National Guard units regain full control of the streets of the Capital.
8. AM The USS Crusader begins a bombardment of the town of Esbjerg, with the purpose of disrupting repairs on the port facilities. RAF-fighters take off from England, but are engaged by squadrons of Joint Strike Fighters based on the carrier USS Midway. The dogfight is very even, but, with a superior tactical manouver, the Americans emerge victorious, albeit paying a high price - 3 squadrons are destroyed. Another 2 take off from the Midway, headed for Karup Airbase in Jutland. The destruction of this facility would significantly diminish threats from the east for the US North Sea squadron. The Americans are engaged by 10 Danish JSF's, and, having the advantage of surprise, the Danes succesfully destroy the two squadrons. This immediately earns the Danish pilots near sainthood in the minds of Danes, and comparisons are being made between them and the Danish naval heroes of the past. Noon: The USS Crusader and the cruiser USS Antietam begin a long-range bombardment of major Danish cities. First target= Denmark's second largest city of Aarhus. Strong international protests follow, and the Pentagon promises to "put a stop to these actions, and make a thorough investigation". 2 PM: Amassing their forces a final time, the Allies once again try to drive the Americans from the North Sea. The British battleship HMS Valiant, commanded by the Supreme Allied naval commander, Sir Winston Frederickson, alongside the French cruisers "Marseille", "Victoire" and "Liberation", the Dutch frigate "Nederland", German submarines "Rache" and "Bismarck" and the pride of the German Navy - the battleship "Deutschland" advance on the 6th fleet, catching them off guard. In the ensuing battle, the USS Crusader, USS Antietam and the carrier the USS Midway are sunk. The 2 destroyers USS Chicago and USS Springfield are also sunk, and the frigate USS Lee is so badly damaged that its captain, Captain Thomas Castañeda, decides to fly the white flag, order the crew in the lifeboats, and scuttle the ship. The remaining US ships, a frigate and a destroyer, sees that the battle can't be won, and try to retreat. But a torpedo volley from the Bismarck, and a broadside from the Deutschland sinks the two ships. American media, now operating within a limited freedom of press as a result of the implementation of the Emergency Legislation act, calls the defeat a "tactical setback". In the real world, however, it is the biggest US naval defeat in history, which the European media is very quick to announce. The Allied casualties: The HMS Valiant are slightly injured, the , "Rache", "Victoire" and "Liberation" are sunk, causing 1000 fatalities and 3000 wounded, but the Allies have regained control of the oil-rich North Sea. The territory, that is, because when he saw that the battle was lost, Reginald Growley decides to stop firing on enemy ships, and start firing on the oil rigs, causing the destruction of all the rigs. The North Sea is now without any strategic importance. The American losses, however, are immense: Nearly 6000 dead and 2500 wounded. These casualty figures, however, are kept a secret.
