Halsey flies off the Marine Buffaloes to defend Wake an hour later. At 0748, a patrol SBD attacks and sinks the sub Ro-66, operating north of Wake. Halseys morning search locates the Japanese and he launches a two deckload strike at 0845. At 1005, a poorly coordinated strike still suceeds in sinking the cruiser Kinugasa with 4 bombs and a torpedo, and critically damaging the Furutaka with a single torpedo. The cruiser Kako is also hit by a bomb.
28 G3M 'Nells' attack Wake at 1145, meeting a defending force of 11 Buffaloes and 6 Wildcats (4 from Saratoga). 15 are shot down and the raid accomplishes little. 5 Nells veer off; 3 attack the Tangier, nearing harbor and succeed in hitting her once but without much effect. 2 of these planes are lost. 2 more Nells attack the Maryland and are shot down without achieving anything.

Admiral Goto's cruiser force advances and encounters Task Force 17 (R. Adm. Frank Fletcher), with Maryland, Tennessee, 2 light cruisers and 4 destroyers. Fletcher opens fire at 1615 and soon sinks the Furutaka and Kako, as well as the destroyer Uzuki. Goto retires aboard Aoba at 1655. Kajioka is ordered to press home the invasion 'without regard for your fate'. Task Force 18 (R. Adm. John Newton) finds him and opens fire at 1740, damaging the cruiser Yubari and the destroyer Oite. Kajioka withdraws under cover of darkness and smoke, then doubles back, delivering a lethal torpedo attack at 1830 which sinks New Orleans and destroyer Mahan, with Salt Lake City damaged and out of the fight. A second torpedo attack on Fletcher at 1910 severely damages Tennessee (2 hits) and sinks light cruiser St. Louis and DD Flusser. But Maryland soon has the range: Tenryu is sunk by gunfire at 1920 and Ikuta Maru at 1940. By this time Kajioka has lost his enthusiasm; he has ordered his force to retire at 1930 hours.
