| 1941 | 572 Add An Event | Japan's slow older battleships had meanwhile been tasked to support the invasion of the American-held Phillipines--but first needed to destroy the American Air units there, including two squadrons of the supposedly remarkable B-17 Flying Fortress, a few of their Wildcat fighters, and host of older aircraft including the P40 Warhawk and the P35 Brewster Buffalo. America's commander on the ground, Gen. Doug McCarthur, had recently expressed suspicions as to Japan's
intentions.
His doubts were met at 7:00 AM when 150 aircraft including Zero fighters and Betty bombers launched from Formosa Island -- as detected by the crew of a USAAF B-17 named "The Big Mama Sue", which had clear channels to report a warning to Manila. As the Japanese planes launched, a fleet of 60 Japanese ships, transporting six division of the Imperial Army, set sail. Around noon, the wave of Japanese aircraft was sighted nearing Manila (by a squadron of P-40's and another of Wildcats, and just out of sight, the P-35s who flew at maximum height, preparing to dive). After the American fighters watched the Zeroes fly past, they fell upon the slow, poorly armed, but even lighter armored Betty bombers. There was little contest. While the Zero's turned to meet the unexpected threat, the American planes destroyed the inbound bomber formation, the insult made worse as the inferior P-35's fell upon the wounded, surviving Betty's trying to flee home. Low on fuel, the Zero pilots had been armed with bombs beneath their wings to attack the airfield. Heavy, they were also a bit sluggish. Worse, their pilots were now forced to choose between the fighter-escort and bombing missions. The wisest completed their bombing missions, then turned to fight their way home. This allowed them to destroy America's hangers and pock their airfield, and while flying out, embarrass the Army Air Force pilots in their slow P-40 Warhawks while high-tailing it back to Formosa. Remarkably, three Zeros were downed by Wildcat pilots from Kentucky. In the chaos, a Japanese navigator radioed word that there were no B-17's at the airport. But in the confusion that was mounting at Japanese command, the threat of their absense was not realized. At 3:30PM two squadrons of B-17's from Manila rained bombs upon the Japanese ships near Formosa Island. Though most of the bombs hit water, three did not. Two struck transports, one struck an unidentified destroyer. Zero's then won the day, wiping out the B-17's who were completely without escort. Nonetheless, the wounded transports forced the Imperial Navy to return to the docks of Formosa, delaying their planned invasion of the Phillipines. America's biggest threat to the Japanese invasion force, it's B-17's, were no longer a threat and could not be replaced as quickly as Japan's lost Betty's. New Betty's would fly to Formosa from China. More ships would support the invasion fleet. On another day. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |

The Russians put most of their army into the boats so they can capture the Italian boats and rebuild the navy lost to them at the North Sea, but it was a trap. Most of the Venetians left their boats and set them on fire and put them out to sea, with most of the Russian ships close together, the "fireships" hit a Russian ammo depot on some of the fleet and set it and most of the Russian fleet on fire, ending the Russian threat from the East. But part of the Russian army of Poland is still to arrive...but the delay tactics used by the leader of the X Spanish Imperials was able to buy the Spanish Empire and the RDI sometime to build defenses for the Russian invasion of Italy. So badly, that Brian and Mike are at each other’s throats, each accusing the other of their views of what the Beach Boys should do. Carl Wilson tries to calm the situation, but to no avail. It only gets worse, to the point where Brian and Mike trade blows, with Brian receiving a cut under his left eye and Mike with a bloody nose. After both are separated, Al Jardine suggests that the band “cool off for a while,” that Brian and the rest of the band do other things for a while. In his car after the rest of the band has left, Brian sits in his car. He considers smoking a joint, but he thinks it will make things worse. He returns to the studio. A camera crew was still there, having filmed the session for the upcoming documentary Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution. They had taken footage of the whole session, including the fistfight between Brian and Mike (which would be excised from the program). Brian asks the crew to film him at the piano. With the tapes rolling, as well as the session tape, Brian sings a solo piano version of “Surf’s Up.” The lighting is adjusted to reveal Brian’s cut under his eye, to give an impression of a battered genius who has finally achieved his goal despite his troubles. This scene is prefect of the mood of the song, and Brian is satisfied enough to allow this scene into the program. After playing the session tape back, Brian gets an idea.
