Some people say a man is made out of mud
well a poor man's made outta muscle and blood.
Muscle and blood and skin and bone.
and a mind that's weak..but a back thats strong.
And he was born one morning when the sun didn't shine..
He picked up his briefcase and went to the White House
He loaded 16 tons of that number 9 coal..
Til- the Straw boss said Well-uh b-less my soul!
You load 16 tons and whaddaya get??
another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don'tcha call me 'Cause- I can't go...
I owe my soul to the Company Store
So if you see him coming..you better step aside,-
Alot of men didn't and alot of men died.
He's got one fist of iron, and the other of steel..
And if the right one doesn't get you.. Then the night one will...

| 1982 | 1454 Add An Event | Between Battlestar Galactica and Monday Night Football (to say nothing of the recently-wrapped Charlie's Angels) ABC is the undisputed titan of the TV ratings, with NBC a close second with Star Trek: Phase II. CBS is still in third place (despite having both 'Dallas' and 'Magnum P.I.' in the top 20 Nielsens along with the venerable '60 Minutes'). Leadership problems at the network lead to its sale to Lucasfilm, with George Lucas taking over as network president. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi will air during the Fall 1983 season and star Mark Hamill and Carrie Fischer in a reprise of their movie roles. Shooting for the TV series and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi is taking place simultaneously to make maximum use of the sets and miniatures. The Incredible Hulk is cancelled to free up money for the new project, but Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno are kept on contract with CBS. Rumor has it that either or both will be cast in the Star Wars series. Lucas however does keep Dr. Who and the other series that are doing comparatively well on the network, and is in the market to expand CBS' already highly-regarded sports coverage. Yamamoto meets with his fellow naval commanders at Heraklion, Crete to finalize plans and preparations for invading the Black Sea area. Debate rages whether to take Sevestopol and reinforce the coming Allied advance from Romania or gamble and go for Rostov, allowing a quick thrust into the Caucasus and the seizure of much of the Russian oil supply. If Rostov fails, it will be much more difficult to evacuate the troops than a Sevestopol invasion. Also, the Ukrainians will knowingly support the Alliance while the Russians between the Volga and Don may or may not. In Washington, DC, Truman debates with Churchill, Laval, and other Alliance leaders about the possibility of landing on the moon to create a lunar observational outpost to look for Vegans. The win completes the first undefeated season in the Bears' 24-year football history, and their first State Championship since before the current playoff system began. When the game ends, Sam, a senior, is joined on the field by his younger sister, Catherine, and her boyfriend, Michael Pacholek, both sophomores. They agree that this is the greatest football game they've ever seen. The game had nearly been lost, because E.B. had blown a 20-19 lead, and trailed 27-20 with a minute and a half to go when the tying touchdown was scored, but a two-point conversion pass was lost in the sun by the intended receiver, and it looked like Stevens would win the game, 27-26. But Sam's interception and return win it, and he goes down as the greatest hero in E.B. football history. So far. It would have been a crushing defeat if the Hawks had beaten the Bears, the kind of close-but-no-cigar, bizarre-occurrence ending that befalls "cursed" sports teams like the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and New York Rangers. But Mike quotes Irish author George Bernard Shaw, who likely never saw a game of American football, and tells Sam, "You couldn't let it end that way. 'Some men see things as they are, and say, Why? I dream things that never were, and say, Why not?' And so do you, and that's why the Bears won!" Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |

| 1961 | 4189 Add An Event | General Westmoreland announces that “free elections” will be held in Cuba the following March. All Cubans will be permitted to vote and run for office, except those found to have been connected to or actively supportive of the Castro government. A “ballot integrity commission” consisting of U.S. military officers will supervise the vetting of voters and candidates. Critics suggest that the involvement of this military commission will guarantee that the election will be anything but free. Westmoreland's supporters respond that the commission is necessary to ensure that Cuba's government is not "infested with Reds." Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event |
