Early in his term, Alan Keyes announces reactionary rhetoric in favor of returning to American traditions. Conservatives and liberals alike condemn Keyes' speech as being pro-theocracy. Keyes calls for outlawing abortion, bridging church and state, and making Christianity the state religion. He also mentions a "Final Solution" calling on America to return to its white Anglo-Saxon roots, to follow the example of South Africa before Nelson Mandela intervened, and to have stricter border control allowing guards to shoot illegal immigrants on sight at the US-Mexico border. The vote is close, but Koenig as Sire Kalas wins. "The Living Legend" is re-cut (with many scenes re-shot) and aired during November sweeps. Chairman George Mitchell announced today that form Dallas Cowboy & Washington Redskin Star Calvin Hill would be the President and COO of The Washington Senators. Hill is an investor in DC Basball Inc. Hill will be in charge of all non-basball operations focusing especially on the planning and construction of a new stadium in downtown Washington.
Mitchell also announced that hall a famer Frank Robinson would be the Senior Vice President and General Manager. Robinson was the field manager of the Expos.
Robinson first job would be to hire a new field manger.It is hoped that this position will be filled withing the next two to three weeks. Robinson said it was his intention to be very active in the free agent market.

Gerorge Harrison is listed as a musical guest for the show. Before starting his first number George steps up to the mic and talks about Lorne Michaels offer to the Beatles and as he talks out walks Ringo to take his place at the drums. The audience is in shock so George turns around and smiles at Ringo and says, "Long time no see." Ringo nods. George then asks Ringo if he is up for a classic and Ringo says yes. The start to sing "While My Guitar Gentle Weaps" but George stops and says this isn't right to do without Paul and John. Then from the back of the studio Paul and John pipe up and say, "Then lets make it right." As they walk to the stage phones in the US are on fire with everyone calling friends and neigbors to see if they are watching television history. Once they complete the set for the first music break, Lorne Michaels comes and gives the band thanks and tells the everyone watching about the new albums by the Beatles and to call thier friends, family and neighbors because the Beatles would be back later in the show to perform again.

Everett Dirksen of Illinois and Charles Halleck of Indiana, the Republican Leaders in the Senate and the House, respectively, are joined by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and former Governor of New York and two-time Presidential nominee Thomas Dewey. Between them, they represent most of the factions of the Republican Party. They go to the White House, and inform President Nixon that he will almost certainly be impeached by the House on Friday, and that he cannot count on more than 20 votes in the Senate to sustain his Presidency. He is doomed to removal from office, probably before Christmas. "The only way out is to resign the office, Dick," Eisenhower tells him. With the might of "Ike" behind them, the words are a heavy load for the 35th President.

Mike Schmidt is sent to the Mets, who have longed for a 3rd baseman for years, for cash and a few minor leaguers. Roy Smalley is dealt to the Yankees, and numerous other good players are sent packing for cash. However, the Twins’ scouting and farm system have been so abysmal as they’ve been spending so little money on it, it’s feared it will take the Twins years to recover - if they ever do.

The Manned Orbital Laboratory is opened with four men stationed onboard. Observational equipment is installed inside the station and pointed directly at the Federation industrial heartland. Quetzalcoatl shuttles run to the station every week for resupply, crew changes, and reloading of film. Zero gravity medicine and experimentation is included as part of the mission: the space pioneers figure that if they can get data from the military, it beats a blank.
Federation forces notice that once again they are settling into a defined border: the reinforced Maginot Line that runs along the French-Belgian border down to Straousburg and across southern Germany, down the old border of eastern Tyrol, and the Italian border to the Adriatic. With the imminent collapse of the French Communist regime, the last great hope of the Federation to take the whole of France seems to be lost. Stalin is worried that if the war front stalls his troops could be subject to fierce partisan attacks and demoralization.

Confident that his troops have chased away the fleeing Spaniards for good, Montezuma, the Aztec leader, sends emmisaries to neighbouring tribes in order to improve its relations and to propose alliances against the "bloody-thirsty treasonous false-gods" who Montezuma says "threaten to destroy every single person and piece of land in our glorious empires." Several empires, including the declining Mayans, immediately throw their support behind Montezuma and his crusade.

Nixon is indited on 28 counts, including conspiracy, burglary, wiretapping, "supressing freedom of speech," obstruction of justice, 13 counts of bribery relating to campaign contributions, defauding the government, and one count of tax evasion.
One count get a lot of public comment, especially by comics:
"21. Bribery, Fraud. Solicited and obtained for the reelection campaign of President Nixon, in June, July and August, 1972, from Ray A. Kroc, Chairman of the Board of McDonald's, Inc., contributions of $200,000, in exchange for permission from the Price Commission, first denied on May 21, 1972, then granted on September 8, 1972, to raise the price of the McDonald's quarter pounder cheeseburger, in violation of article II, section 4 of the Constitution and Section 201, 372, 872 and 1505 of the Criminal Code.*"
A young, politically active, law teacher at the University of Arkansas, who had worked for the McGovern campaign in 1972, said, "I didn't vote for Nixon, and I love Quarter Pounders, but this is just plain ridiculous. This isn't the basis for a consitutional crisis." Mr. Clinton's remarks are included with a number of others in an AP wire story on reaction to the charges.
Garment will represent Nixon. Jaworski will prosecute.
* Note, this charge was one the real that was one of the supporting "specifications" from the HJC. I have quoted it exactly and take no license with it.

It is the only time in which he is really seen to be a baseball "czar," as he is best at building consensus through relentless work ont he telephone and meetings with others individualy. It will, however, endear him to players, and owners will later see him as "putting off labor problems for a decade."

Byzantine rocket scientists on Crete develop the Phalanx rocket using the solid fuel derived from ammonium percholrate, aluminum powder, and rubber as the contact substance. The test flight of the 20-ft long rocket exceeds all expectations, reaching an altitude of over 10,000 feet with over 35 seconds of burn time before returning to earth. Its acceleration is exceptionally fast and very powerful, tests indicate it has a mechanical pull equal to 3500 HP. However, there are notable drawbacks to this rocket: it can't be throttled in-flight and it is exceptionally hot, the recovered missile shows temperatures in the combustion chamber almost melted through the casing of the rocket by the time it had crashed. Someone suggests using Milo or Milo II alloys as a potential solution, which the military seriously considers.
Byzantine metallergists continue working on new alloys despite recent upgrades in security. German and British spies were caught trying to get into the main lab in Thessalonki, warranting a clamp-down of security.
Field tests of IR-4 weapons are resoundingly positive, the weapon is hailed all over the Empire and exported directly to Bulgaria. Bulgaria and the Empire have a border as relaxed as that of the US and Canada at this point, all one needs is a photographic ID to cross each side.
Imperial citizens begin to notice their country's recovery form the Depression is taking root. Dramatic overspending by the government has created a large deficit but is the only thing keeping many people employed. Large radio networks develop and most of the people in the country now have electricity or at least a town cafe where they can catch up on events broadcasted over one public and several private networks.
Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopea has caused him to leave the League of Nations just as Japan did after its adventures into Manchuria. Italy is diplomatically isolated and looks to Germany for alliances. Byzantine military planners are forced to consider the possibility of being hedged in on three sides by hostile powers (USSR in the north, Kurdistan in the east, Italy in the west) with only a handful of satellite countries between them.
The Kurds begin waging a guerilla war against Persia and Iraq to break off their pieces of Kurd-claimed territory and create a "greater Kurdistan".

Burmese troops cross the Thai boarder from Kayah state, capturing the Thai town of Mae Hong Son. A division of Thai reserves are immediately sent to attack the enemy postition and drive them out of Thailand. Mortar shelling opens up on Mae hong Son at 10:15 local time, ans Thai troops enter the town an hour and a half later, driving the Burmese out of the city and back into Kayah State.

Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover initiates part 2 of the coup. He orders the 10,000 American troops guarding the capital under the respectable General Pershing to storm the capitol and capture Roosevelt's cabinet. Immediatly a brutal street war is fought, with the brutal units of the Homeland Defense's "Home Guard" fiersly contesting it's hold on the capitol. Eventually 8,000 loyal government troops arrive and force Pershing to order a retreat, although not after capturing Attorney General Olney and the Vice President. Pershing stays behind, and by what will be the greatest bluff in the war, persuades Roosevelt that he was a prisoner of the rebels. As a precaution Roosevelt sends him to the Western Front in France.

An agreement between owners and players ends the incredible free-wheeling, free-spending era of major league baseball. Expansion is agreed upon for 1990, and the leagues will be split into divisions again. Offense will be stepped up on purpose in baseball, as it was done in the 1930s, though not nearly to that extent. Dawson will lead the Cubs with 48 home runs, though, even in a 10-team league. And, as part of that, the DH will be adopted, in the A.L. for now, and possibly in the N.L. later.

Within a week, Khartoum surrenders. Omar Bashir is captured, and sent to Jerusalem for trial.

Sasanid Persians attacked Kabul. After three days of siege, the Chinese commander ordered his men to withdraw from the city. The Sasanid Persians took city after the Chinese had abandoned it. With the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan was under Sasanid Persian hands. Arcadius turned his eyes towards the land that were once part of the old Achaemenid Persian Empire: the plains of northern India.

Andre Thornton has been the DH for the Phillies in their '76 and '77 pennant years and 1977 Series team. He's been out with injuries for most of 2 years, and now has a chance to make it as a first baseman once more, as he often was on the PHillies in the '70s, till the signing of Pete Rose in '79. So, the Phillies trade Thortnton, prospect Julio Franco, 2nd baseman Manny Trillo, and 3 other players to the Spiders for pitcher John Denny, catcher Bo Diaz, and super prospect Von Hayes. The Spiders also get Lonnie Smith, but send him tot he league champion CArdinals for pitcher Lary Sorensen. Others are involved, but these are the main ones. It is joked in Cleveland that the amazing thing about it is now, 3 people (Thornton, Trillo, Bake McBride) will know what it's like to be in first place. When the "BWeb" is in first for a couple days, the joke will be that the club's so bad, all that experience can only give them a taste of first place for a couple daays in early June. Thornton winds up at first with 1st baseman Mike Hargrove generally in left.

With talk of secession on the rise in Southern states, South Carolina is the first to act -- with an emphatic rejection of secession. The state legislature passes a "sense of the legislature" bill declaring, "the Union now subsisting between South Carolina and other states under the name of the 'United States of America' must stand firm." It orders the Senators from South Carolina to take steps to secure indictments for treason against the legislatures of any states that attempt to secede. Its most remarkable feature, however, is a response to the failed Crittenden Compromise. It declares to be the law in South Carolina, and proposes as Constitutional Amendment XIII: "Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are free citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Section 2. The United States shall assume and pay any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave and for the birth of a free citizen to any slave. Section 3. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article."

On his 51st birthday, President-elect Robert F. Kennedy meets with Richard Nixon, Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower and four times a candidate for the Presidency. He offers Nixon the post of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, with substantial input in foreign policy, second only to that of Secretary of State-designate Cyrus Vance. "I'll need somebody thoroughly experienced, somebody who understands the Soviets, the Chinese, the Middle East, Latin America, all of it," RFK says. "You can have the job one one condition: That you do not run for President in 1980. If you want to run in 1984, when you'll be 71, I don't care. But not in 1980, when, hopefully, I'll be running for re-election." Nixon tells RFK, "Don't worry. As bad as you beat George Bush, my wife will do worse to me if I ever run for President again!" Just eight years after RFK's brother John F. Kennedy won an incredibly close election against Nixon, Nixon is working for a Kennedy.

On this same day, NASA submits a proposal to the International Astronomical Union to rename the area around the Apollo XI landing site the Sinus Orbitatis "Bay of Bereavement." (The IAU will ultimately reject the proposal, but nearly all lunar maps printed thereafter in the United States (and several other nations) name the southwest corner of the Sea of Tranquility the "Sinus Orbitatis," and, in 1982, bowing to the pressure of usage, the IAU will formally adopt the name.)

Later that day, Prime Minister Chamberlain telephones American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to make changes in the Neutrality Act of 1935, to aid the United Kingdom and France with American weapons. Roosevelt agrees to Chamberlain's idea, and in the coming days, more than 1 million American weapons are sent to Europe.

At the start of his monologue Ringo briefly thanks Michaels for inventing him, and then begins to play “Octopus' Garden.” Halfway through the song, a voice chimes in from off stage “You weren’t gone to start with out us, were you Ringo?” Out walks Paul McCartney, followed by John and George. “How about a classic?” John asks as the band take their places. The four original Beatles then proceed to play “With A Little Help From My Friends” together for the first time in eight years. Fans who wonder where John Bonham is during all this soon have their questions answered, as he comes on stage later on to perform along side Ringo in a sketch called “Dueling Drums”, a send up both of Starr’s western-fetish, and his perceived rivalry with Bonham. The Beatles play two more songs before the show is over.
