| 1976 | 1037 Add An Event | Gerorge Harrison is listed as a musical guest for the show. Before starting his first number George steps up to the mic and talks about Lorne Michaels offer to the Beatles and as he talks out walks Ringo to take his place at the drums. The audience is in shock so George turns around and smiles at Ringo and says, "Long time no see." Ringo nods. George then asks Ringo if he is up for a classic and Ringo says yes. The start to sing "While My Guitar Gentle Weaps" but George stops and says this isn't right to do without Paul and John. Observational equipment is installed inside the station and pointed directly at the Federation industrial heartland. Quetzalcoatl shuttles run to the station every week for resupply, crew changes, and reloading of film. Zero gravity medicine and experimentation is included as part of the mission: the space pioneers figure that if they can get data from the military, it beats a blank.
Federation forces notice that once again they are settling into a defined border: the reinforced Maginot Line that runs along the French-Belgian border down to Straousburg and across southern Germany, down the old border of eastern Tyrol, and the Italian border to the Adriatic. With the imminent collapse of the French Communist regime, the last great hope of the Federation to take the whole of France seems to be lost. One count get a lot of public comment, especially by comics: "21. Bribery, Fraud. Solicited and obtained for the reelection campaign of President Nixon, in June, July and August, 1972, from Ray A. Kroc, Chairman of the Board of McDonald's, Inc., contributions of $200,000, in exchange for permission from the Price Commission, first denied on May 21, 1972, then granted on September 8, 1972, to raise the price of the McDonald's quarter pounder cheeseburger, in violation of article II, section 4 of the Constitution and Section 201, 372, 872 and 1505 of the Criminal Code.*" A young, politically active, law teacher at the University of Arkansas, who had worked for the McGovern campaign in 1972, said, "I didn't vote for Nixon, and I love Quarter Pounders, but this is just plain ridiculous. | 1935 | 1861 Add An Event | Byzantine rocket scientists on Crete develop the Phalanx rocket using the solid fuel derived from ammonium percholrate, aluminum powder, and rubber as the contact substance. The test flight of the 20-ft long rocket exceeds all expectations, reaching an altitude of over 10,000 feet with over 35 seconds of burn time before returning to earth. Its acceleration is exceptionally fast and very powerful, tests indicate it has a mechanical pull equal to 3500 HP. However, there are notable drawbacks to this rocket: it can't be throttled in-flight and it is exceptionally hot, the recovered missile shows temperatures in the combustion chamber almost melted through the casing of the rocket by the time it had crashed. Someone suggests using Milo or Milo II alloys as a potential solution, which the military seriously considers.
Byzantine metallergists continue working on new alloys despite recent upgrades in security. German and British spies were caught trying to get into the main lab in Thessalonki, warranting a clamp-down of security. Field tests of IR-4 weapons are resoundingly positive, the weapon is hailed all over the Empire and exported directly to Bulgaria. Bulgaria and the Empire have a border as relaxed as that of the US and Canada at this point, all one needs is a photographic ID to cross each side. Imperial citizens begin to notice their country's recovery form the Depression is taking root. Dramatic overspending by the government has created a large deficit but is the only thing keeping many people employed. Large radio networks develop and most of the people in the country now have electricity or at least a town cafe where they can catch up on events broadcasted over one public and several private networks. Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopea has caused him to leave the League of Nations just as Japan did after its adventures into Manchuria. Italy is diplomatically isolated and looks to Germany for alliances. Byzantine military planners are forced to consider the possibility of being hedged in on three sides by hostile powers (USSR in the north, Kurdistan in the east, Italy in the west) with only a handful of satellite countries between them. The Kurds begin waging a guerilla war against Persia and Iraq to break off their pieces of Kurd-claimed territory and create a "greater Kurdistan". | 1968 | 2171 Add An Event | Serbian politican Slobodan Milosevic writes a letter to Yugoslav ruler Josip Broz Tito urging him to abandon his neutral stance on the Ussuri War and join with neighboring Romania and Albania in supporting Communist China against the U.S.-Soviet coalition.Tito fires back that such a move would seriously jeopardize Yugoslavia's national security,angering Milosevic and inspiring him to start laying the groundwork for a coup d'etat in Belgrade.
