| 1940 | 3928 Add An Event | Over half a million people converge on the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., protesting what they feel is the theft of the election by President J. Edgar Hoover and his subsequent arrests of defrauded Democratic candidate James M. Curley and union leaders A. Philip Randolph, John L. Lewis and Walter Reuther. To be among the speakers are the defeated Vice Presidential candidate, former Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace; the Congressional Minority Leaders, Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky and Congressman Sam Rayburn of Texas; House Minority Whip John McCormack, a former Massachusetts opponent of Curley's who now demands his release; Eleanor Roosevelt, who in the 19 years since her husband's death has been one of America's leading liberal activists; Paul Robeson, the black singer and actor who has stood by the cause of labor in America and abroad; and Rabbi Stephen Wise, the nation's leading Jewish cleric. All denounce the Hoover Administration for election fraud, abuses of legal authority, and prejudice toward blacks and Jews. General Douglas MacArthur, as he had for the Bonus Army March in 1932, commands Army units on the site. Hoover's military buildup has given the Army much better weapons than it had eight years earlier. General George C. Marshall, the Army Chief of Staff, gets word to MacArthur that the troops are not to fire unless fired upon. MacArthur tells Marshall that he is under the direct command of President Hoover and will not obey Marshall's orders. Robeson tells the crowd of his belief that "American Negroes will not fight for Mr. Hoover and this fascist regime!" At this point, an angry soldier -- he is never identified, but believed to be a Southerner -- fires at Robeson, killing him instantly. The audience furiously begins to move toward the soldiers, and machine-gun fire breaks out. Thousands attempt to flee. The shots continue for ten minutes, and tanks roll over many of the protestors. It is a massacre. The government's official report, written by the Dies Commission under the leadership of right-wing Texas Congressman Martin Dies Jr., states that "Six thousand Communists were killed." It will be many years before an independent investigation can be undertaken and the true death toll is revealed: 31,467 -- "Enough to fill a small major-league baseball park," a historian will write. Wallace, Barkley, Rayburn, McCormack, Mrs. Roosevelt and Rabbi Wise are all arrested. That night, the Voice of Washington, Fulton Lewis, goes on radio and television and spouts the government line: "We did what we had to do: Communists, socialists, labor unions, agitators, aging flappers and other 'liberated women,' lust-crazed Negroes, money-crazy Jews... They had to be stopped. Strength through unity. Unity through faith. I'm a God-fearing American, and I'm goddamned proud of it. And when we all are, then... America triumphs!" Hearing the news from a guard at Danbury Prison, Curley collapses in tears. "It's my fault," he tells the guard, "every bit as much as it's Hoover's. I sent those poor souls to their deaths." Those words are all the Administration needs. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event | |

| 2001 | 4225 Add An Event | At a National Security Council meeting, President Gore expresses frustration at the failure of the previous day’s raid in Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Webb observes that bombings of that sort are notoriously ineffective; even the massive air raids of World War II, he reminds the President, failed to knock out German industry, while the bombing raid on Tripoli during the Reagan years which had been intended to kill Libyan dictator Muammar Kaddafi failed to do so. JCS chairman General Hugh Shelton insists that since the Kabul government has refused to cooperate with the U.S. in rooting out Al Qaeda, the only workable option is to immediately send in a large ground force to do the job. “We’ve discussed this already, at our meeting on October 7,” he reminds the President. President Gore is still reluctant to invade Afghanistan. Turning to CIA Director George J. Tenet, he asks whether the Agency can mount a covert operation to go after Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Tenet responds that it is possible, but warns that if the operation is exposed the U.S. will be forced to move immediately to open military action. He advises that preparations for a full-scale invasion continue, and stresses the need to keep those preparations secret. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event |
