According, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for anther term as your President. But until my last day in office, nearly one year hence, I will continue to do the work of the American people, to the best of my ability. Thank you very much." Another standing ovation. Democrats and Republicans alike, the news media, and the American people in opinion polls, seem to think JFK is doing the right thing by not running for re-election. Afterwards, however, he meets with Vice President Bill Fulbright. "You can't run either, Bill," the President tells him. "They'll use you as my stand-in, and try to punish you for what I've done." Fulbright: "Do you really think the American people would punish you? Do you really think they'd punish me in your place?" Kennedy: "I'm not talking about the American people. I'm talking about the Republicans. Anyone in my Administration runs, and they instantly become 'the sex candidate' and 'the mob candidate,' no matter how ridiculous it is." | 1994 | 4194 Add An Event | For the first time, a Super Bowl is a rematch of the previous year's game. And, for the first time in 41 seasons, an NFL Championship is reversed, with last year's loser defeating the winner. The Arizona Outlaws defeat the Buffalo Bills, 31-30 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. By a weird coincidence, three former teammates at East Brunswick High School in Central New Jersey have gotten the Outlaws to this point: Quarterback Bryan Fortay and safety Sam Crandall, son of a New Jersey Congressman; and Josh Miller, taken by the Outlaws after playing at the University of Arizona and in junior college in the State. Miller's field goal with 12 seconds left ices the victory for the Outlaws, who become the first former United States Football League team to win an NFL Championship, and the first Arizona-based team to win a World Championship in any sport. (The Phoenix Suns have reached the NBA Finals twice, and Arizona does not yet have a team in Major League Baseball or the National Hockey League.) | 1980 | 4206 Add An Event | Asked his opinion of the Republican debate by reporters, President Kennedy observes, “Of course Governor Reagan won. He paid for the microphone, after all.” Kennedy reminds his questioners that Reagan had actually paid the entire cost of the debate, leaving the impression that he had purchased the outcome as well. Predictably, both Reagan and Bush angrily deny that the fix was in. Their denials only help to keep the issue alive, even though the two continue to spar energetically through the remainder of the primary season. | 1969 | 4221 Add An Event | Despite George Harrison’s plea that the Beatles not return to live performances, Paul McCartney somehow convinces him, along with John Lennon and Ringo Starr, to give a one-off performance on the rooftop of Apple Corps to “promote” their upcoming album, which will be titled Get Back. The concert is filmed, for posterity, and features the Beatles playing several album songs, including “Get Back,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “One After 909,” and “Dig A Pony.” Determined to make this concert memorable, the Beatles blast their songs through downtown London, even when the police arrive on the rooftop. Defying a plea by the police to stop, the Beatles play another version of “Get Back,” even cranking up their amplifiers to an even louder level. Having had enough of this, the police put a stop to the concert, and haul the Beatles off to jail. While being dragged off the roof, John Lennon states “I’d like to thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.” The group is cited for disturbing the peace, fined, and released. | 1933 | 4137 Add An Event | President Hindenburg of the Weimar Republic appoints Alfred P. Hugenberg of the German Nationalist Party as Chancellor. With Wehrmacht troops still in effective control of the country under the emergency decrees of the previous April, the President expects the industrialist-politician to serve essentially as a front man for the military, an arrangement the increasingly senile Hindenburg finds appealing. He is doomed to disappointment. He has underestimated Hugenberg, who has spent the time since the April crisis cementing his ties to important military officers and his peers in the business community, while maneuvering to seize control of the weakened National Socialists. With SA chief Viktor Lutze in prison along with Nazi Party leader Heinrich Himmler, Hugenberg has been able to quietly take the reins of the SA and SS. The Nationalist leader will be no one’s puppet. | 1976 | 4238 Add An Event | As per Brian’s prior request, the Beach Boys convene at their studio in Santa Monica to resume work on the follow-up album to Ocean Blue. The group decides to consider the following songs for the new album: Carl’s “It Could Be,” Brian’s “Lucy Jones” and “Come to the Sunshine” (the latter a co-write with Van Dyke Parks), Dennis’ “Old Movie” (written with Brian), and Al’s “Coastline.” Several new songs will be written for the album: “Angel Come Home” (written by Carl and new writing partner Geoffrey Cushing-Murray, with a lead vocal by Dennis), “Everyone’s in Love with You” (written by Mike), “Lady Love” (written by Ricky), “That Same Song” (written by Brian), “Had to Phone Ya” (written by Brian and his sister-in-law Diane Rovell, with a lead vocal by the group), “Lady Lynda” (written by Al), “Everybody Wants to Live” (written by Brian and Carl), “Rubles” (written by Al), and “That Special Feeling” (written by Brian). All, of course, will not be used on the final album. Brian also considers resurrecting a song he and Al wrote called “Good Time,” which was recorded for Sunflower. He will also resurrect two more songs - one he tracked back in 1965 during the Summer Days sessions, “Sandy,” which with a rewritten lyric by Brian, will be entitled “Sherry, She Needs Me.” The other is a song he wrote on Halloween in 1970, entitled “My Solution,” which he will work into one called “Happy Days” (no relation to the television show of the same name). Dennis will also resurrect a song he wrote in 1969, entitled “I’m Going Your Way.” Sessions for the album will continue into mid-May. | 1927 | 770 Add An Event | Lieutenant Colonel Dwight Eisenhower addresses the Senate Internal Repairs Committee. He tells Committee Chairman Senator Robert M. LaFollette, Junior, that the roads nationwide are indeed terrible. “From 1919 to 1921 I trekked across the fruited plain of America for the Wilson Administration,” Eisenhower, known as Ike, tells the Senator, “And what I found were horrible roads. My tanks and cannons couldn’t even move when they reached Missouri and Arkansas. We need paved roads nation wide. We need them so that our army can move from coast to coast.” The Committee approves of Hoover’s Interstate Highway Plan, and now it is off to the rest of the Senate.
