Israel makes a plea to the nations of Western Europe for aid, saying the United States has become as "anti-Semitic as Adolf Hitler himself!" In the United States, members of the Jewish community make a plea to President Nixon not to go through with the UN's request to invade and occupy Israel, saying he would only make enemies with Jewish-Americans. Nixon, however, says that if Israel had not gone and started the war as it did, then they wouldn't be in this situation. Later in the day, President Nixon goes before the American people and tells them about the destruction of the Enterprise and the death of her crew. He makes a promise to the American people that this war with Israel will not be like the just ended war in Vietnam and that he will use every means necessary to ensure a victory. He also points out that, unlike the late war, the United States will have help in this one. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event

They pass all test flights, and prove to be not only safe but efficient and reliable. It is calculated that with a full fuel complement they will be able to reach Alpha Centauri in approximately 41 years. As a result, great preparations are now underway as the launch date fast approaches. One each spacecraft, there are 100 people, all who have been prepared for life in space by undergoing training. Of each 100, however, roughly 20 were scientists involved in the ARCC and have volunteered to go on the expedition. Another 60 are full grown adults who have volunteered, and the other 20 are infants between one and three years old, who will be raised aboard the ship. Aboard each ship are greenhouses, as well, to produce suitable amounts of food to support each crew. Computers aboard each ship also have the history of man recorded onto them, as well as great books such as the Bible and the Koran, so that when the ships reach the destination and for some reason they cannot return, this information will not be lost on them. The Canadian government is quick to inform the people who plan to head to Alpha Centauri that they are going to be permanent settlers, who will establish colonies on the planets there. They tell them that while there is enough fuel to make the return trip to earth, most of them must stay there so that the effort will no be in vain. Aboard each ship are also large numbers of construction materials, so that upon arrival the settlers can construct landing pads, bunkers (in which to live), and tanks to produce antihydrogen to fuel their ships. They fought as hard as they could, but the battle-hardened Vietnam vets drove the militia back from their hard-held barricades and into the woods beyond, where they scattered into ambush pockets, waiting till a soldier went by before shooting him in the back with a shotgun or a .22 rifle. Fighting like that, the U.S. soldiers had to withdraw to use the Georgians' own barricades as their new ones. The Georgians were content to spend the night in the woods, making new barricades and/or trenches. Discuss This Timeline (0 Entries So Far) | Previous Event Next Event

| 1964 | 4129 Add An Event | Folksinger Bob Dylan releases his third album, "The Times They Are a-Changin'." His first two albums, "Bob Dylan" and "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" -- the latter featuring "Blowin' In the Wind," a song attacking war and prejudice -- did not do very well, but "The Times" brings him the acclaim he has been looking for. It includes the title track, "When the Ship Comes In," and the antiwar song "With God On Our Side." Although the entire album was recorded before the assassination of President Albert Gore, the release has come afterward, and it seems to touch a vein in the American psyche, as does something that the new President, John F. Kennedy, says in his first State of the Union Address, delivered tonight. "We stand at the edge of a New Frontier," Kennedy says, "the frontier of unfulfilled hopes and dreams. It will deal with unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered pockets of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus." With Martin Luther King, the black Southern minister and anti-poverty activist, seated in the House of Representatives gallery next to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the new President announces that "This nation declares unconditional and total war on poverty, and enemy that his ended and otherwise ruined more lives than any of America's foreign foes."
